Actually, the first question is “Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all?” For the answer, consult your Nissan Owner’s Manual. Unless there’s a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change. But let’s say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance. The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesn’t just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts. In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands. Feb 6, 2008 Hey guys I need a quick question answered here. I know how to get to the trans fluid dipstick but I was wondering if you're supposed to check idleing in neutral or idleing in park?

Park on a level surface and set parking brake. Shift through all gears, then back into park. Pull out dipstick and clean. Reinsert and pull out to check level. Follow picture below:

Sorry to revive an old thread, but in interst of keeping clutter down... The above proceedure(s) seem to be in conflict with the FSM for checking fluid level - can anyone confirm? FSM states to re-insert the dip-stick so that the bolt bracket does NOT come into contact (allowing the dipstick to be inserted further). This makes a huge
difference on read levels - on mine, at cold, inserting to meet the bracket gave me a HIGH on COLD. Inserting all the way gave me a LOW on COLD. Thoughts? Joined May 31, 2006 · 2,254 Posts
I have the FSM and saw no such thing (2nd gen). Joined Jun 17, 2009 · 155 Posts
See below.
And yes I'm referring to 2nd gen

After re-reading it I mis-spoke in my original post (inserting just to the bracket gives a false low reading, not false high). I'm willing to bet this discrepancy isn't enough to cause any real damage, but it's always good to fill to manufacture's ideal level. Joined May 31, 2006 · 2,254 Posts
Look at the bottom pic and clearly it says insert all the way in. Also, the pic clearly shows it all the way inserted. They are only saying to take a reading with the dipstick "reversed" that is to say opposite from where you would line it up to bolt it down.

jam the stick all way in the hole. no seriously take the truck for a drive to operating temp, set parking brake, and check fluid level while idling in neutral. a little overfilled is not going to hurt anything. Joined Feb 26, 2015 · 532 Posts
Dumb question. Where is the dipstick? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk Joined Mar 21, 2016 · 3,894 Posts
It's on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The top of the dipstick is a black rubber knob and it's held to the dipstick tube with a 10MM head bolt. Joined Feb 26, 2015 · 532 Posts
