YOU must MATCH your part number to the one we provide otherwise it will not fit or will not work. Ebay compatibility chart is not enough. ECM will require professional installation and VIN number programming or it will start and then shut down or not start at all.

You'll find the 2004 Ram 1500's transmission control module (TCM) located on the firewall on the passenger's side of the vehicle. To locate it, You'll be looking for a thin, rectangular silver and black module with a wiring harness plugging into it. It almost looks like a wallet, but slightly larger. If You know what You're looking for, it's almost impossible to miss. If You need to replace the TCM, You'll be in for quite the expensive through most automotive mechanics; expect the job to cost up to $900 including parts and labor. Alternatively, if You want to jump into the repair Yourself, You can find a new TCM around the $500 price point, or a remanufactured unit for as little as $175.

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 5.9 4x4 that I am trying to replace the TCM on. However, I cannot find any info that shows where this thing is located on my truck. Several things I've read mention it being in various locations, but none actually show how to get to it.

I don't see it under the hood anywhere so I assume it is accessed under/ behind the glovebox. Can anyone confirm this and tell me what all is involved in getting to it?

The PCM handles the engine and transmission functions. There is not a seperate TCM. It's the unit in the engine bay with 3 plugs and bundles of wires.

Although this diagram shows a seperate module but I don't have one in front of me to confirm either.

LOL.....46RE doesn't use a separate TCM (as stated). 2002-2003 RFE transmissions have a separate TCM.

Ok well that's good to know , thanks guys.

Before I go and buy a PCM then, let's see if you guys think that will resolve the problem I'm having... My truck will start and takeoff fine. However, after it goes into 2nd or 3rd gear, it will not shift back down. So I either have to drive in fail safe mode, or turn it off and restart it each time I come to a stop. Therefore I don't drive it anywhere at the moment.

I really don't think it has anything to do with the transmission itself, because that was rebuilt just a few thousand miles back. Plus, when I restart the truck, all gears work fine through the first cycle.

Thoughts?

With only few thousand miles I'd be talking to the shop that rebuilt it. If that's not an option I'd monitor the shifts and pressures through the ports. Also if the valve wasn't replaced you could have pressure bleed over or something going on with it. Hard to diagnose on a forum but I don't think your problem immediately to be electrical.
Also have you adjusted the throttle valve cable? If it is out of adjustment it can give quick shifts and no downshifts.

In what way is it a bad link? I would beg to differ, it works fine.

EDIT - Nevermind, I found out what you mean. I don't follow every link, just the ones I need and it looks like almost all of them are bad now. That sucks since they were a great resource in my opinion.

Shouldn't all be bad, I posted a bunch in there somewhere.

How do you reset the transmission control module on a Dodge Ram 1500?

After turning on the car, you must shift through the automatic transmission gear at least two times. In manual cars, shifting between drive and reverse should occur three times. The gear shifting must continue for at least 10 miles, and automatically reset the transmission control module.

Where is the TCM module located?

The transmission control module can often be found below the cover at the back of the transmission case. It should be just below the engine control module's position. Sometimes it's found under the center console in the interior or even under the hood near the battery or inner fender panel.

How hard is it to replace a transmission control module?

Replacing the TCM is normally easy since it has to first be accessed for diagnostics. The hardest part can be finding the TCM. In most vehicles, it's in the engine bay, but some manufacturers place it inside the car. It can even be located in the trunk.

How long does it take to change a transmission control module?

How long does it take to replace a transmission control module? If you do the work yourself and have the necessary tools, it shouldn't take you more than 10 to 20 minutes to replace your TCM, depending on how many other engine parts are in the way and if they need to be removed for you to get to the TCM.
