I just smelled the chikcen that has been defrosting for the soup and it stinks really badly. Can I use chicken straight from the freezer or does the chicken need to be defrosted before putting in the soup?

Thanks for your help, I googled my questioned and called some ppl but no one really knows-

I usually just take the chicken straight from the freezer to the soup. I assume you're talking about uncooked chicken to make the soup because that's what I'm talking about.

I'm not voting the same way ... anything cooked whilst still frozen gets rubbery ... try soaking it first in some room temp water to help it defrost ...

I also thought it would get rubbery, but truth is, I ahve no time for stuff to be defrosting anyway, this will be like an experiment if it works this will be my new method- hopefully it will work out.

It will work as far as having great chicken soup. As far as having good chicken to eat from the soup...you may not be as happy with those results.

I always cook with frozen chicken, but if it smells bad it needs to be thrown out. Only once have I had anything smell bad out of the freezer. It should have either no smell or smell vaguely like raw chicken (go figure, hehe)

another vote for thawing it out first, unless it is just impossible...but yes, if it smells, you shouldn't use it...and then you can only really tell if it is good when thawed...so I'd let it thaw and then decide.

I use bones or the neck and wings straight out of the freezer. I dont serve those pieces, so I wouldnt know if they were rubbery or not, but DS eats them and hasnt complained yet

You can do it , and I have a lot, but keep in mind the actual chicken will be more dry and stringy when the soup is done, and the bones will be more crumbly so you'll have to strain them out of the soup.

OP wasn't talking about using the smelly chicken. She was asking about taking new chicken straight from the freezer to use.

I LOVE recipes that call for frozen meat/chicken directly into the pot or crockpot... HOWEVER if the chicken smell funky I would trash it. I'd rather the lose the $$ than deal with my entire family sick with food poisoning. Nothing worse than vomit on the bedding... UGH!

nopes it doesn't if properly thawed - I eat the chicken with the soup when I make it - although I usually use fresh ...

I used the frozen chicken - actually it was 4 big chicken legs that were frozen together- the soup came out a little too chicken flavored for my taste but everyone else loved it. I took the chicken from the soup and made eggrolls with it- but I don't think the chicken was rubbery- I saved one polka to give to my baby.

And of course if a chicken smells you should dump it, my question was about taking new chicken from the freezer and not having time to thaw it.

Thanks again everyone for all your help.
