White cabinets and black stainless steel appliances

So your kitchen features black stainless steel appliances—how sleek! The color black is becoming more and more popular in the kitchen as all-white rooms begin to fade away. That said, you may be wondering what color to paint your cabinets to best complement the black hue present.

As it turns out, there are a number of directions in which you can go, according to designers. If you love color, great—by all means, pick a bold hue and go to town. But if you prefer neutrals or are looking for something monochrome, that's A-OK, too.

Keep reading to hear the merits of interior designers' favorite cabinet hues.

Think Saturated

Saturated blue and green hues look lovely paired with black kitchen appliances, designer Shelly Rosenberg says. "After two pivotal years, all-white clinical kitchens are a fading trend; we need warmer grounding spaces that soothe us," Rosenberg comments. "Black appliances offer us the opportunity to apply colors with a cocooning effect such as deep moss-green, rich Bordeaux, or slate blue.”

Designer Cheri Etchelecu-Martin agrees that saturated paint can be a wonderful route in which to go. "I suggest Indigo Batik by Sherwin Williams, which can create a cozy sitting room feel depending on the architecture of the home," she says. "In my opinion, black is a timeless color."

Green, in particular, continues to have a major moment, and designer Linda Hayslett is all for pairing it with black in the kitchen.

"Sherwin Williams Lucky Green would look beautiful with black stainless-steel appliances," she notes. "The green color would pop off of the black that they would complement each other very well."

Designer Tina Ramchandani expressed similar sentiments, noting, "The shimmer of the black stainless can enhance the depth of gem-like greens and blues to create a stunning kitchen."

Brown

Designer Erica Evensen has a vision for a dramatic kitchen setup involving the color brown.

"For a moodier look, I would love to see black stainless appliances set against a dark stained cabinet with a tight grain, paying homage to a classic pairing of brown and black," she says. "Dark counters, such as soapstone, that would patina with age, paired with an unexpected backsplash, like antique mirrored tile, would create a truly unique space."

Designer Kathleen Walsh agrees that wood can look ultra-beautiful alongside black appliances. "Pair them with natural oak cabinetry and a Vermont Danby marble countertop," she suggests. "The clean, light veining of the marble would help to tie the appliances and cabinetry together nicely."

What's great about a natural finish is that it can be styled in a number of different ways. "Natural finished cabinets go great with black stainless-steel appliances," Hayslett says. "They can really make it feel like a modern or cozy cabin space, depending on the hue chosen and wood."

Soft Black

Why not go for a bit of tone-on-tone action? Walsh is all for this concept of pairing black appliances with black cabinets.

“We like using Benjamin Moore Onyx, and I’d use white, marble countertops and backsplashes with either grey, lilac, or a pale green veining to help add just a touch of color and dimension to the look," she says.

Hayslett is also a fan of black paint in this type of scenario. "One color cabinet that is definitely sexy with black stainless steel appliances is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black," she says. "Having everything in monochrome really can make a kitchen look clean and contemporary."

Blue/Gray

Designer Megan Molten plans to utilize a blue/gray hue from Sherwin Williams' Historic Charleston Color Collection in an upcoming client project. "Cooper's Basin and black stainless steel appliances would be a killer combo with black hardware and maybe a pop of brass in the light fixtures," she says. "I love this new trend."

Designer Molly Torres is also all for blue/gray. "We love to contrast black stainless steel appliances with cabinets in a soft, unexpected color, like Benjamin Moore Palace Pearl," she notes.

As I’m sure you know, we very recently finished our modern farmhouse kitchen makeover.

White cabinets and black stainless steel appliances

While we changed virtually the entire kitchen, one of the most impactful changes has to be the new Samsung black stainless steel appliances we incorporated from The Home Depot, which we first talked about here.

The Features We Love

There were several factors that went into our appliance choices for the kitchen.

Of course one of the things we love most about our new appliances is their black stainless steel finish.

While looking clean and modern, the black stainless reads a bit more formal than regular stainless. Which is a perfect look to have when the kitchen is very open to the living and dining rooms. Not too black and not too shiny. #justright #goldilocksreference

But ultimately each of the three major appliances in our modern farmhouse kitchen also have their own features that we adore.

The Fridge

As we mentioned in our previous appliance post, we had almost the exact same fridge in our last house. You know, the one we visited on date nights for ages before we could actually buy it.

The new one is simply a little larger (because there was space for larger) and a different finish (the old one was regular stainless).

We chose almost the identical model again here because we loved its:

  1. Water and ice dispenser being on the outside of the fridge. Some models have their water tap and ice maker inside. But we didn’t want the kids opening the doors every time they wanted a drink of water.
  2. Ice dispenser not taking up space on the door. Some models had big bulky ice makers on the left door, which was at about head height for me and very in-your-face, which I didn’t like. Instead ours is inside on the upper left out of the way.
  3. Plentiful drawers and storage buckets. We have teenagers. We also love our condiments. So lots of storage configuration options were a must have.

The Dishwasher

Honestly this dishwasher was chosen almost entirely based on the fact that it matched the other black stainless steel appliances and was also a Samsung. (I like matchy-matchy with my appliances but not so much my other decor. Weird, right?)

It also happens to be extremely quiet, and has an adjustable upper rack which we didn’t know at first.

You see, because the kids and I are home all day, we use a lot of dishes. And we have normal sized dinner plates and large travel mugs and pots and pans, etc. Well when the dishwasher was delivered it came with the upper rack on the lowest setting. Which meant when we loaded the bottom rack normally, on a few occasions we inadvertently blocked the spinner from spinning. Which meant the water stayed on for a long time, pouring directly at the door. Which meant that darn thing leaked like three times. But that was entirely our own fault.

I’d recommend reading the little user manual booklets that come with new appliances. #thereforareason

The Range

The range. Oh the range.

White cabinets and black stainless steel appliances

I was in love with this range the moment I laid eyes on it.

I mean, just look at its smooth finish, clean top (no dials, etc. on the back) and gas-range-look-without-any-dangerous-indoor-flames (I’m a little clumsy).

And it has both a regular baking oven, a convection feature, meat thermometer and a drawer that glides on proper rails (vs the old kind that meant the drawer got stuck all the time). Plus the inside is SO big.

(The only drawback we’ve found with the range is that when you lock the controls, the dials for the stove top elements still function. This is fine for us, but if you have toddlers who may mess around with these things, you might want to find a range that either has the controls at the back like a traditional stove, or one that locks out all of the controls.)

White cabinets and black stainless steel appliances

Given that we’ve renovated (in one way or another) each of our last four kitchens, we are loving this new kitchen most of all.

And our new Samsung black stainless steel appliances from The Home Depot play a huge part in that!

If you’re thinking of getting new appliances, you should go in-store to see all the finishes and features for yourself. I bet you’ll fall in love with something!

Shannon

White cabinets and black stainless steel appliances

Does black stainless steel go with white cabinets?

Is it OK to have black and stainless steel appliances?

If you are in the process of fully transitioning your kitchen to black stainless steel, it is perfectly acceptable to mix black appliances and stainless appliances— especially if your stainless has black accents or handles.

Will black appliances go out of style?

"Matte black is a classic, enduring tone, which makes it a great choice for people who want their kitchen to be in style for years to come," Bellinger says. Neutral and timeless, matte black isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
