Home » ICD-10 » ICD-10 Codes for Congestive Heart Failure Table of ContentsHeart failure, sometimes known as congestive heart failure (CHF), occurs when your heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. Certain conditions, such as narrowed arteries in your heart (coronary artery disease) or high blood pressure, gradually leave your heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump efficiently. Not all conditions that lead to heart failure can be reversed, but treatments can improve the signs and symptoms of heart failure and help you live longer. Heart failure in pregnancy is noted mostly in the peripartum period. Lifestyle changes — such as exercising, reducing sodium in your diet, managing stress, and losing weight — can improve your quality of life. One way to prevent heart failure is to prevent and control conditions that cause heart failures, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity. TYPES OF HEART FAILURE
SYMPTOMS OF CONGESTIVE HEART FAILUREHeart failure can be ongoing (chronic), or your condition may start suddenly (acute). Heart failure signs and symptoms may include shortness of breath (dyspnea) when you exert yourself or when you lie down, fatigue and weakness, swelling (edema) in your legs, rapid or irregular heartbeat, reduced ability to exercise, persistent cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm, increased need to urinate at night, swelling of your abdomen (ascites), very rapid weight gain from fluid retention, lack of appetite and nausea, difficulty concentrating or decreased alertness, sudden or severe shortness of breath and coughing up pink and foamy mucus, and chest pain if your heart failure is caused by a heart attack TREATMENT FOR CONGESTIVE HEART FAILUREThere are several medications that can be used to treat CHF. The first is ACE inhibitors. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) open up narrowed blood vessels to improve blood flow. Vasodilators are another option if you cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors. ACE inhibitors shouldn’t be taken with the following medications without consulting with a doctor, because they may cause an adverse reaction. The second type of medication is beta-blockers. Beta-blockers can reduce blood pressure and slow rapid heart rhythm. Beta-blockers should be taken with caution with the following medications, as they may cause an adverse reaction. The third type of medication is diuretics. Diuretics reduce your body’s fluid content. CHF can cause your body to retain more fluid than it should. Thiazide diuretics cause blood vessels to widen and help the body remove any extra fluid. Loop diuretics cause the kidneys to produce more urine. This helps remove excess fluid from your body. Potassium-sparing diuretics help get rid of fluids and sodium while still retaining potassium. If medications aren’t effective on their own, more invasive procedures may be required. Angioplasty, a procedure to open up blocked arteries, is one option. Your cardiologist may also consider heart valve repair surgery to help your valves open and close properly. Enter your email address below: What is ICD 10 code for Acute systolic congestive heart failure?ICD-10 code I50. 21 for Acute systolic (congestive) heart failure is a medical classification as listed by WHO under the range - Diseases of the circulatory system .
What is Acute systolic congestive heart failure?Systolic heart failure is a specific type of heart failure that occurs in the heart's left ventricle. The left and right ventricles are the bottom chambers of the heart. In a person with systolic heart failure, the heart is weak, and the left ventricle can't contract (squeeze) normally when the heart beats.
Is systolic heart failure and congestive heart failure the same thing?Systolic congestive heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood effectively. It may happen when the heart muscle is too weak or when another health problem prevents it from circulating blood efficiently.
What is Acute combined systolic and diastolic congestive heart failure? In systolic CHF, the ventricles cannot produce enough pressure in the contraction phase to push blood into circulation. On the other hand, in diastolic CHF, the ventricles cannot relax, expand, or fill with enough blood. Combined CHF is a combination of the two.
