How to change battery in a bmw key fob

Standard key fob batteries typically last for three or four years. Depending on the BMW key fob you have, it may be time for a replacement.

If you have a smart key or comfort access BMW key fob, you’ll need to replace the battery by following these quick steps:

  1. Purchase a CR2032 battery from an auto shop or department store. You can expect to pay about $2 for it.
  2. Remove the valet key by pressing the tab on your key fob.
  3. Use the key or a flathead screwdriver to pry open your battery cover.
  4. Remove the dead battery and replace it with the new one.
  5. Close your key fob and return the key to its housing.

If you can’t open your key fob because it has an indent in the side, you have a non-comfort access key fob. Since your key fob battery is rechargeable through your car’s ignition, you’ll need to go for a long drive to recharge the battery.

Once you’ve successfully replaced or recharged the battery, be sure to test it out by locking and unlocking the doors a few times. And before you head out again, take a moment to take a look at the Jerry app to find out how much you can save on your car insurance.

A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even help you cancel your old policy.

Non-Comfort Access Key Battery Replacement

How to change battery in a bmw key fob

The BMW key that has the side indent has a rechargeable battery. It wasn’t designed to be serviced. That’s why you can’t open the case. This battery gets charged when it is inserted into the ignition.

If you take short trips, you do not allow enough time for the key to charge. Take at least a two-hour or a longer trip to recharge this BMW key.

If the battery has completely died, typical on a 10-year car, you can open the case, but it will require cutting the key plastic part.

You can replace the built-in battery with a new rechargeable 2032 battery

Diamond Key Battery Replacement
