Hell in a cell 2022 match card

WWE fans in the Chicago area, get ready to go on lockdown. Hopefully the fun kind, in this case, as the Allstate Arena prepares to host Hell in a Cell on Sunday, June 5.

Similar to Money in the Bank, Hell in a Cell has evolved over the years into an entire event themed around its namesake gimmick match. But that’s where the similarities end; while MITB is now a major show with ramifications that echo far down the road, HIAC feels like something of an afterthought. To wit, this year’s card features only two title matches and just one appearance by the Cell itself.

That said, WWE premium live events that look forgettable on paper sometimes surprise to the upside thanks to the hard work of the talent, and the potential for that in 2022 begins with Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins inside Hell in a Cell. WWE has consistently positioned Rhodes as a top star since his return, and Rollins is as reliable a main event performer as the company has.

The show will also pay off the most entertaining subplot on WWE programming since WrestleMania when Kevin Owens faces Ezekiel. Owens is a gem both in the ring and on the microphone, but he has taken his character to the next level with his paranoia-fueled disbelief over the true identity of Ezekiel. If you needed proof that excellent pro wrestling storytelling can happen at any part of the card, this is it.

It’s possible that WWE could still add a match or two during SmackDown this week, in which case we’ll update our preview with the latest. In the meantime, read on to get up to speed on everything you need to know for Hell in a Cell 2022.

Cody Rhodes vs. Seth "Freakin'" Rollins - Hell in a Cell Match

The story so far: As rubber matches go, it’s hard to beat Hell in a Cell for deciding things. Yet this isn’t even a true rubber match since Cody is 2-0 against Seth since showing up as his surprise opponent at WrestleMania. Rhodes has tried to move on but Rollins hasn’t let him, determined not to let Cody steal the spotlight he thinks should be his. The promos the two men cut heading into this match were excellent, as was the energy in their pull-apart brawl. The crowd should be hot for this one.

What should happen: You’d think it would be Rollins’ time to get at least one victory in this feud. But Rhodes probably needs this win more if he’s going to be pointed toward a title shot later this year. He should complete the hat trick, though in a grueling encounter.

What will probably happen: Rhodes either wins, or he loses because whoever he will feud with next intervenes. Remember, no DQs inside Hell in a Cell, and WWE certainly isn’t above a copout finish at one of it’s non-major premium live events.

Bianca Belair (champion) vs. Asuka vs. Becky Lynch - Raw Women's Championship Triple Threat Match

The story so far: It’s not often that the champion in a Triple Threat Match is along for the ride, but that’s sort of happened to Belair here. Other than Kevin Owens, Lynch has been the most entertaining performer on WWE TV lately, continuing to evolve her character as she pursues a spite-filled comeback. Asuka has been on target as well, pegging Lynch as a crybaby. And Belair? Well, she’s still looking for the signature title defense that will put her over the top as a champ, and this could be it.

What should happen: If fans are to believe in Belair this time around, giving her the victory here would be the best possible way to do it. Pinning Lynch would be ideal, but that seems a step too far.

What will probably happen: Belair pins Asuka to retain, but under circumstances that allow Lynch to remain in the title picture through SummerSlam.

Theory (champion) vs. Mustafa Ali - United States Championship Match

The story so far: Whether you think Theory is being pushed too hard, too soon or not, it’s hard to deny that he’s taken the opportunity and run with it. As United States Champ, he’s proven to be almost as good a schemer as Mr. McMahon himself, stacking the deck against Ali in masterful fashion. Ali has been a feel good story since he made a surprise return to WWE programming following real life issues with how he was being used, but Theory is the biggest betting favorite on this card for a reason: Hardly anyone expects Ali to win.

What should happen: If neither Rhodes nor Belair were winning, a case could be made that Ali should win to give the crowd a feel good moment. Since we think they’ll both be victorious, extending Theory’s run with the title makes the most sense.

What will probably happen: Ali gives a very good account of himself but Theory pins him in the end.

Bobby Lashley vs. Omos and MVP

The story so far: Let’s be real: You don’t need to have that much of a narrative to interest fans in a showdown between two very large men like Lashley and Omos. But to carry it past three meetings, you sort of do, and the presence of Lashley’s former manager MVP has been just the thing to sustain this feud. He’s been extremely believable as the jilted party, insisting that only his guidance made Lashley into the All Mighty star he is now. Lashley has a 2-1 record in the three previous meetings, though his WrestleMania Backlash steel cage win came with something of an asterisk since he got thrown through the cage.

What should happen: Doesn’t Omos need to win this to continue being taken seriously? If he failed one on one, won the rematch only with assistance then failed (technically) inside a steel cage and also loses even when the odds are 2-on-1, that’s a pretty bad look. Lashley is over and has MVP’s presence as an understandable excuse if he loses, so WWE should give the Nigerian Giant his moment here.

What will probably happen: The betting lines suggest the consensus is that Lashley will go over here, so we’ll go with that. And he’ll get to stick it to MVP as well, most likely.

Finn Balor, AJ Styles and Liv Morgan vs. The Judgment Day

The story so far: It’s kind of like a Galactic Empire vs. Rebel Alliance thing, no? The bad guys are powerful and united, forcing a ragtag group of good guys to band together to stand against them. The Judgment Day concept is solid, with Edge as the veteran puppeteer and two strong younger talents as the muscle. But it still feels like it’s missing … something. Edge constantly teasing additional members for his stable means a new recruit is almost definitely coming here, whether it’s from inside or outside the official participants in the match.

What should happen: If a betrayal is going to take place, it should be Balor, who has a legit gripe about the way he’s been booked for months and is equally good as a heel or face. Yet that also feels too obvious, so who knows?

What will probably happen: The Judgment Day wins thanks to some additional assistance, likely someone less well known/less exciting than Balor. Edge gloats and maybe the good guys have to do more recruiting too.

Ezekiel vs. Kevin Owens

The story so far: It’s not clear that Elias’ repackaging as Ezekiel would have worked out so well with anyone but Owens playing opposite him, but … What’s that? You say Ezekiel isn’t Elias, but his younger brother? Not you too! Agh! But seriously, K.O. has taken this story and run far, far beyond what it could have been, and we should all be grateful for that. What a legend.

What should happen: Ezekiel gets the pin, helping to build him as someone who gets good crowd reactions even after this program is over.

What will probably happen: This will be a time that WWE doesn’t overthink it or try to get too clever, and Ezekiel wins.

Madcap Moss vs. Happy Corbin - No Holds Barred

The story so far: Hey, they put a SmackDown match on the card! Excellent. Fully justified snark aside, this is a bout that makes sense for this show, given as a more serious Moss is looking for revenge after Corbin tried injuring him with a chair. The former sidekick is shedding his comedy gimmick and trying to show he can make it on his own, which honestly isn’t a bad narrative for a midcard feud. Why couldn’t this have been inside the Cell, though? The issues between the men warrant it.

What should happen: Moss needs a win here or else his makeover is for naught. That doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee, but this feels like the most obvious pick on the whole card.

What will probably happen: WWE occasionally overthinks these things but shouldn’t here. Moss wins, hopefully giving him a little momentum for whatever program he goes to next.
