Equate pregnancy test horizontal line instead vertical

The Equate Pregnancy Test, which is available at Wal-Mart for approximately $4, is a urine test that detects the pregnancy hormone known as human Chorionic Gonadotropin, or hCG, as early as the first day of a missed period. The test has a thumb grip at one end and an absorbent tip at the other end that is covered by a plastic cap. The front of the test has an egg-shaped, clear plastic area in the middle that protects the Results and Control windows from splashed urine. The Results window is round in shape, and the Control window is square-shaped. The design of the Equate Pregnancy Test makes it easy to read within 3 to 4 minutes after use.

Remove the protective cap that covers the absorbent tip and then, while gripping the thumb grip, hold the absorbent tip at a downward angle in your urine flow for a minimum of 10 seconds.

Replace the protective cap and lay the test on a flat surface with the Results and Control windows facing up.

Examine the results window after 3 minutes. The presence of a “plus” sign in the Results window and a vertical line in the Control window indicates that you are probably pregnant, but be aware that the lines that make up the “plus” sign don’t have to exactly match in color since one line can be lighter or darker than the other. The presence of a “minus sign” or a single horizontal line in the Results window and a vertical line in the Control window indicates that you are probably not pregnant.

Wait 1 more minute to read the pregnancy test if no results are seen after 3 minutes, but don’t read the test after 10 minutes.

Tips

It is normal for a light pink color or horizontal lines to move across the Results and Control windows as the test begins to work. Repeat the test in 1 week if you get a negative result but still haven’t had a period.

Warnings

The test is considered invalid if no line appears in the Control window after 3 to 4 minutes and if no lines or a single vertical line appears in the results window.

So, my mind got the better of me and I bought a pregnancy test. It was the equate pregnancy test if that makes a difference. I got a faint horizontal line in the test window and a vertical line in the control window. The directions for the test only show three options... A vertical line in the test window and a vertical line in the control window, no line in the test window and a vertical line in the control window, and no line in either window. There is nothing in the directions that explains the horizontal line in the test window. I called the number on the box. The person who answered the phone said that "At this point in time, we consider that a positive result. But you should take another test tomorrow morning, or go to your doctor's office to be positive."

Obviously, I am going to do that. But I am just curious, has this happened to anyone else? What was the outcome?

I should add that the line appeared right away and was still there at the 2 minute mark (The time that they suggest to look at the results) but had faded away completely by 5 minutes.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm pretty sure that I'm not, as I stated in my previous post about how the mind can play tricks on the body. I just took this test because my mind got the better of me. I was surprised to see the line appear on the test! I think I will save the other test and wait until I actually miss a period before I take it :)

the line in the control window doesnt have anything to do with your result, it is to show you the test it working. the test window is what matters. if you got a negatve there thats a no and a positive there thats a positive.
so i would think no vertical line in the test window means you are not pregnant.

Based on this image (and the "instructions" to the right of the actual testing windows) I would say this is a negative result.

Are you sure the line wasn't there before you took the test? could be just an abnormality on the paper that was there before that you only NOTICED afterward because you were staring at the window for a result. In my experience the lines get DARKER over the next few minutes, not lighter. The fact that it seemed to wash away as your urine passed through would make me think it was something already on the paper, not related to pregnancy hormones.

The reactive area is ONLY printed in ONE line. If a horizontal line really did appear when you tested, I'd say clearly, there was some malfunction in the manufacturing on your test. If the RIGHT strip got put in crooked, the line would appear facing the wrong direction with the same chemical reaction as if it had been facing the right direction (in which case it's a positive). But if THAT went wrong, I guess it could have been almost anything.

Test again tomorrow.

Great information about tests. I'm on several trying to conceive boards and people HATE and get vanishing results from Walmart brand tests. I'd try another brand. I've seen others get this result and I've seen it go both ways but every single test I've ever seen where you get an abnormal result you are usually instructed that something went wrong and it's inconclusive. I'm sure the Walmart line doesn't want to say that because you might insist on a refund or want another test from them. If they give you the answer of go to your doctor... well that's all the more they are pry going to have to deal with this clearly dysfunctional test be it user error or a bad test.

Why does my pregnancy test have a horizontal line?

An evaporation line is a line that appears in the results window of a pregnancy test as the urine dries. It can leave a faint, colorless line. If you're not familiar with evaporation lines, you might see this line and think you're pregnant.

What does one horizontal and one vertical line mean in a pregnancy test?

Positive Pregnancy Test For single window tests a positive result would show both the test line and another line to indicate that you are pregnant. For the two-window tests, in one window a test line would appear and in the second window a plus sign (+) will appear even if it is faint to indicate that you are pregnant.

What does a positive equate pregnancy test look like?

With some home pregnancy tests, one line means the test is negative and you're not pregnant, and two lines mean the test is positive and you are pregnant.

Does it matter what side the line is on a pregnancy test?

When taking a pregnancy test, any line in the test indication area is considered a positive pregnancy test, even if it is lighter than the control line. The darker line is usually the control line.
