What are the benefits of worksheets?

Here's a list of the benefits of worksheets for children. Worksheets might get repetitive and make your children disengaged. But, fun and entertaining worksheets can have some great benefits for your students.

  • Background learning: As children work through worksheets, they will be learning and absorbing information. Even if they don't feel like they are.
  • Cover lots of topics: Worksheets are great for covering lots of topics. There are packs of worksheets that cover animals, maths, reading, fruit. When children are working through these, they'll never even notice how much learning they've done.
  • Repetition: One of the oldest learning phrases still applies today, 'practice makes perfect'. The reason this saying has stuck around is that it's true. Worksheets are a great way for your students to practice.

Improper Fractions and Common Core State Standards

This Improper Fractions to mixed numbers worksheet can be used to help your math class meet the following Common Core State Standards:

Grade 4

  • (4.NF.A.2) Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
  •  (4.NF.B.3.C) Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Grade 5

  • (5.NF.B.3) Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a รท b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.

Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers

To change an improper fraction to a mixed number, you must divide the numerator by the denominator.

This will give you how many whole numbers the improper fraction represents. For instance, 15/5 would convert to a whole number of 3.

If there is a remainder left over, the remainder should be written as a fraction.

For instance, 10/3 converted to a whole number would be 3.33. As a mixed number, this would be written as 3 and 1/3.

How do you convert a mixed fraction to an improper fraction worksheet?

In order to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, we need to divide the numerator by the denominator. After the division, the mixed number is formed in such a way that the quotient that is obtained becomes the whole number, the remainder becomes the new numerator and the denominator remains the same.

What is the easiest way to convert a mixed number?

To put this another way: to turn a mixed number into a fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator (the bottom part), and add the result to the numerator (the top part).

What are improper fractions examples?

A fraction is called improper if the numerator is greater than the denominator. Examples are 9/2, 8/5, 10/3, etc.
