Christina B. answered • 05/18/20 Experienced, Positive, and Effective Tutor with an M.Ed. You asked how to add 2-3/5 + 3-1/2. What makes this tricky is that these fractions do not share a common denominator. You need to convert them into equivalent fractions that both have the same denominators.
Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25... Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10... Ten will be your new denominator.
You make the first equivalent fraction by multiplying 3/5 by 2/2. Since 2/2 = 1, you are just multiplying 3/5 by 1, which does no change its value. For 1/2, you are multiplying both the numerator and the denominator by 5 (5/5) because 5 is the factor that you need to multiply 2 by in order to get to your desired denominator of 10.
While you can convert fractions to decimals in order to add them, not all fractions convert to decimals that are easy to work with. Thirds, sixths, and sevenths, for example, do not convert to terminating decimals, so you will need to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using the fraction forms of numbers in order to complete your school work accurately.
