You asked how to add 2-3/5 + 3-1/2.

What makes this tricky is that these fractions do not share a common denominator. You need to convert them into equivalent fractions that both have the same denominators.

1. You want to find a number that is a multiple of both denominators. Ideally, it should be the least multiple that they both have in common.

Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25...

Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...

Ten will be your new denominator.

You make the first equivalent fraction by multiplying 3/5 by 2/2. Since 2/2 = 1, you are just multiplying 3/5 by 1, which does no change its value.
