You have ankle instability Ankle ligament reconstruction What is ankle instability ?The ankle is the joint between the bottom of the tibia and the fibula and the upper part of the talus, which is the first bone in the foot located just above the calcaneus. The sliding surfaces are lined with cartilage.
Why an operation ?Some sports or daily activities are impossible in the absence of effective external lateral ligaments, and can lead
to instability accidents and cause cartilage damage. In this context, the natural progression is the gradual deterioration of the joint. What is ankle ligament reconstruction ?Ankle ligament reconstruction consists in reconstructing the anterior talofibular ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament of the external lateral ligament.
An incision is made on the lateral side of the ankle. Part of the extensor retinaculum, which maintains the toe tendons, is harvested.
The operation lasts about 1 hour, and
requires around 3 days in hospital. This operation is carried out under regional or general anaesthesia. Your anaesthesiologist will decide with you the best type of anaesthesia according to your state of health. Post-operative rehabilitation and return to activitiesYou will wear the resin cast for 6 weeks. You will have crutches to help you move around throughout this period, putting no weight on your foot. What are the risks and complications ?In addition to the risks associated with any surgery and the anaesthetic, there are some risks specific to this surgery :
This list of risks is not exhaustive. Your surgeon can provide you with any additional explanations and will be available to discuss the advantages, disadvantages and risks of each specific case with you. What is the expected outcome of the operation ?The pain and feeling of instability should disappear very rapidly after the operation. Complete recovery of
mobility and muscle strength generally takes about 3 to 6 months. Other Ankle SurgeryDr. Paillard also performs the following ankle operations: How long after ATFL surgery Can you walk?2-4 weeks - you will be given a boot to immobilise your foot and be partially weight bearing with crutches. 4-6 weeks - you will still use the boot but can fully weight bear at around six weeks, when you may be able to wear your usual shoes.
How long does it take to heal from ankle ligament surgery? Most patients fully recover from ankle ligament reconstruction after three to four months, and at that time they can resume all regular activities including running and exercise.
Does a torn anterior Talofibular ligament require surgery? If you have suffered a grade 3 ligament tear, you may initially be advised to try six weeks of conservative treatment before going down the surgery route. However, if this has no effect and you still have considerable pain and joint instability, surgical reconstruction of the ligament will be advised.
How long does ATFL surgery take? The surgery may take 2 or more hours. You can expect the following: You will probably receive general anesthesia to make you sleep through the procedure or regional anesthesia to numb the involved leg. During the surgery, your vital signs, like your heart rate and blood pressure, will be watched carefully.
