Kia Sportage - Video tutorial

2022 kia sportage windshield washer reservoir replacement

Model: Kia Sportage MK 2, KM - Years 2004-2010
Part: Windscreen wipers
Operation: Removing the windshield washer reservoir on Kia Sportage

Before disassembling the water container of the windshield wipers, you must remove the front bumper. If you don't know how to do it, I refer you to our other tutorials, but disassembling the bumper quickly consists in removing all the bolts that secure it at the top, bottom and in the wheel arches. At this point disconnect the two connectors, disconnect the small tube thanks to which you can drain the container and unscrew the two screws that secure it from above, then unscrew the bolt hidden but well shown in the video. Disassemble the container and proceed in reverse for assembly.

What is the Windshield Washer Reservoir all about?

Windshield washers serve a simple yet extremely important purpose. A dirty windshield obstructs the driver’s view. They are important especially in very cold climates or in areas with a lot of dirt roads. The windshield washer reservoir holds the fluid that is sprayed onto the windshield. The windshield washer reservoir is usually made of a white, semi-transparent durable plastic and will often have a black or colored plastic cap. The capacity of the fluid reservoir depends on the make and model of your vehicle, but usually ranges from 1 to 1.5 gallons.

    Keep in mind:

    • Frozen washer fluid is a big contributor to cracks in the reservoir.
    • Different washer fluids are approved for different seasons; make sure to use the correct season's fluid.
    • Repairs may slow the leaking, but most cracked reservoirs need to be replaced completely.

    How it's done:

    • The vehicle hood is raised and secured in the open position
    • The windshield washer reservoir is unbolted from inner fender and removed
    • The washer lines are cleaned and flushed out
    • The new washer reservoir is connected and installed then filled with washer fluid
    • The wipers and washers are tested for proper operation

    Our recommendation:

Read your owner's manual to see if the manufacturer suggests certain fluids for certain reservoirs. For example, the reservoir to headlight-mounted washers may only take non-freezing fluid as the headlights do not get as warm as the windshield in cool weather. Have one of our expert mechanics inspect the whole windshield washer system when inspecting the reservoir. A reservoir with a crack should be replaced.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Reservoir?

    • Low or no pressure when activating the washers
    • Fluid leaking out from under the vehicle
    • Filling the reservoir more often than usual
    • Sprayers don’t spray far enough on the windshield or do not spray enough fluid

    How important is this service?

This service is fairly important to the average driver and very important to those in cold climates or in areas with lots of dirt roads. Both road salt and ice can obstruct a windshield without anti-freezing washer fluid in the reservoir. Dust and mud can become too thick to wipe away with just the wipers.

Can you replace windshield washer fluid reservoir?

While it's a different procedure on every vehicle, replacing the windshield washer reservoir lends itself to DIY-ers and newbies, but only those with a lot of patience that see it as a labor of love, so to speak. If you're easily frustrated, you'll need to learn patience to replace some windshield washers.

How much does it cost to replace a washer reservoir?

The average cost for windshield washer fluid reservoir replacement is between $196 and $227. Labor costs are estimated between $91 and $115 while parts are priced between $105 and $112. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific vehicle or unique location.

Why is my wiper fluid reservoir leaking?

A windscreen washer fluid leak is when the windscreen washer reservoir gets a crack in it or is damaged, and the fluid from inside starts leaking out. On most cars, the washer fluid reservoir is located at the back of the engine bay, near the base of the windscreen.

How do you stop a windshield washer reservoir from leaking?

Unfortunately, if you discover a leak in your washer fluid reservoir, the best thing to do is simply replace it. There aren't any good sealants or fixes for the plastic the reservoir is made of and your ability to see while driving is too much to risk of a shoddy fix.
