Hello r/MechanicAdvice, I drive a '16 Cherokee for a work vehicle and the Service 4WD light came on while driving back in November. Took it to the dealership our company works with and after a couple of visits they determined it needs a new Power Transfer Unit. Show When the warning is present, the vehicle is FWD only, however occasionally when you start the vehicle, the warning won't be there and it'll be back in 4WD, which makes me wonder if it's some sort of wiring or sensor issue, perhaps? Any insight would be appreciated. Appointment to put the new PTU in is this Friday. Thanks. (note: this vehicle is not part of the PTU recall) Joined

Jul 28, 2021 I drove my 4XE home, charged it, and when I started the next day. I get the message SERV 4WD under the battery percent. Anyone know what this is?

Jul 28, 2021 I pushed them all in. Some seemed loose. Same error. What does this error mean? Is this the typical check engine light? | 2012 JKU Sahara | 2021 4xe Sahara | Joined Jun 25, 2021 · 159 Posts
You may want to look through this thread in that other site: Service 4WD Message Not 4xE but JL’s all the same. In the end, should take it in to the dealership while you’re still under warranty.

I’ve literally had it 36 hours. I’d hope it’s under warranty. It absolutely is covered. Also, as long as that light is on, the vehicle will not have 4wd capability.

Even if it does go in to 4A it will never use 4WD? I'm not quite sure what you're asking. But when the serv 4wd light is displayed, the Jeep will be in 2wd and unable to use 4wd. It might be a software issue or a bad or damaged sensor among other things.
Check out this JL thread where a temporary fix was made after somebody put a lift kit on and the ABS sensor was damaged. It'll help explain better than I am. Joined Mar 18, 2021 · 337 Posts

Discussion Starter · #10 · Jul 29, 2021 I dropped the 4XE with 120 miles on it off at the dealer yesterday. I've owned the JEEP 36 hours at the time of dropping it off. They told me this on the phone today. "They got it in right away and it needed a part for the four-wheel-drive. There are only five of these parts available in the country, my Service Manager overnighted two of them
here to make sure we can fix your car by tomorrow. " I wonder what the part is as they haven't told me yet. Should these vehicles require new parts this quick? Joined Jul 28, 2021 · 6 Posts

I replaced mine. It was bad from new. Bought fad module and 10 min install. All good now. I plan on fixing bad position sensor on old fad and modifying it so I can run 2wd low range at boat ramp. I did this with Ram 2500 cummins, and jeep crd too.

We got this about a week ago, around 1700 miles or so (at our 200 miles a month use ), it came and went a few times. Switching from 4H Auto to 2H Auto and it disappeared, I guess since you're not requesting 4WD. Had a couple of engagement attempts, where I could feel the front kind of trying to lock, I understand this subsystem is the FAD, (Front
Axle Disconnect), and this could be the electro-mechanical part or the supporting electronics. Over a few days it got to where it pretty much comes on in 4H, so been using it just a little in 2H, the traction control disable light came on one time when I was backing up and it was trying to engage, but that's probably a phantom related issue, it disappeared with a power cycle and stayed off. I did do a another round of seating the fuses/relays, I had done this preventatively about a
month after we owned it. Also checked a specific harness someone on another forum said was disconnected and caused this issue, but it's firmly connected. So I made an appointment We're going to drop it off in a couple of days, drives just fine so no sweat getting it up there (dealer is only ~8 miles away), hopefully this will be a quick fix per some other folks who have dealt with the same issue (and it's not 4xe specific).

If you need assistance while your Jeep is at the dealer, please let us know! Kate Thanks. I don't mind the service requirement, shit happens So I'm hoping it's simply a matter of quickly identifying the issue (it's apparently pretty well known, I even have some service docs to
show them), making the fix, and getting the vehicle back. Joined Apr 1, 2021 · 266 Posts
Thanks. I don't mind the service requirement, shit happens So I'm hoping it's simply a matter of quickly identifying the issue (it's apparently pretty well known, I even have some service docs to show them), making the fix, and getting the vehicle back. Took it in yesterday at 2p, they called
about 3:30p, said it was the "transfer case motor" which sounds like this service sheet someone posted:
(I even showed this to the SA when I dropped it off) However, the part is backordered without any projected availability (sad trombone), so we picked it up today, works just fine in 2WD mode and no sense in it just sitting in their service parking lot. I'll update when the part comes in - according to the document above, it's a super quick R&R, so maybe I can just wait when it does come in vs. another drop off.
Same issue, picked 2021 Jeep Rubi 4xe on Sat 1/29, received the light when Jeep had about 70 miles on it, now has a little over 100 miles. I have not checked fuses but going to check them now
Why is my svc 4WD light on?When the 4WD light appears, it is letting you know that there is an issue with the 4WD system and it must be handled promptly. Another reason why this light may occur is an incomplete shift in gears. This is confusing and damaging to the engine and could result in your 4WD service light flashing continuously.
What does SERV 4WD light mean on Jeep? But when the serv 4wd light is displayed, the Jeep will be in 2wd and unable to use 4wd. It might be a software issue or a bad or damaged sensor among other things.
How do you reset SVC 4WD?To reset the Change Oil light turn the ignition on but do not start and then push the gas pedal 3 times. The Service 4WD light is most likely the 4WD switch on the dashboard. If the lights are acting funny then the switch needs to be replaced.
How do you turn off 4WD low on Jeep?To move from 4WD LOW to 4WD HI, with the vehicle running and a speed between 0 and 3 mph, shift into neutral, then push the “4WD LOW” button. The 4WD LOW light will turn off once it's done shifting.
