My engine threw another code today -- second time in 7 days.

Does anybody know which camshaft sensor this refers to?

Crossing my fingers now that this isn't balance-shaft related.

QSHIP - as I read it, it's left side looking from the front of the car. I wonder if you can swap side for side and see if the problem moves?

Or disconnect the left sensor, clear the codes, and they try and start the car, see if the bank's match?

That's a good idea -- it's been the same sensor called out both times.

I did some research on the balance shaft issue, and I can't tell if balance shaft failures causes drivability issues -- sometimes or always. My car runs fine even when the code is set.

AD07.61-P-4000-94VA correlates the MB codes to OBDII codes, I think before I make any decisions I need to find STAR somewhere locally (or Carsoft?). Any recommendations in Atlanta?

I see from the above it takes two drive cycles to illuminate the MIL, I'm wondering if the codes were set but I just hadn't completed two.

Does anybody know the details of the drive cycle?

You could try MB of South Atlanta(the mymercedesparts dot com people).

More information from today...

  • I used my OBDII scanner to view and reset the MIL and code P0016 (Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Bank 1 Sensor A). This is the second time I've cleared it in 10 days.
  • The ODBII freeze-frame data indicated I was travelling at highway speeds when the problem occurred.
  • I drove 10 miles, made a few stops, then to my mechanic to have the MB codes scanned.
  • No additional OBDII codes were pending and the MIL remained off (not surprising since it took 7 days to re-appear last time).
  • There were no MB codes present other than minor informational SRS and Seat Related (does resetting OBDII also clear MB codes?).
  • Frank was well aware of the 272 balance shaft issues but said, in those cases, the code usually returns immediately after clearing and that my issue was most likely a sensor or actuator problem rather than a worn balance shaft sprocket.

I'm going to wait for one more event and, if it's the same bank/sensor I will swap the sensors next.

I have had 3 of these sensors replaced in the two years I have owned the car. My SA told me it was a common issue. Good thing for a warranty.

jfpslk,

By any chance do you have the part numbers that were replaced?

I should've added: Frank says "Bank 1 Sensor A" is the intake camshaft on the right side (passenger side in a US car).

Same code appeared again today. Freeze frame said 13MPH. I'm seeing a pattern here, when the light does come on, it's upon a hot restart -- after heating up, and then a 5 minute stop. I'm guessing it's the heat soak, and it's the sensor. I'm going to swap the intake sensors left and right tomorrow and see what we get.

Sorry for the delay-

The part number shown on the service invoice is 1-272-051-01-77 followed by the word magnet.

Hope this helps

The Bank 1 and 2 intake sensors are now swapped. I found 1) Both are made by Bosch 2) Bank 2 had an MB part # stamped on it, Bank 1 didn't 3) They were close but didn't look identical -- Bank 2 had a cover over the business end 4) the harness connector on Bank 1 is broken -- the little tang that holds them together is broken off.

I'll post with updates as they happen.

I replaced them on my 2007 350 when I had it due to the code on one of them. There are four on a 350, but one of them requires removal of the power steering pump to do it properly, and I tried without that step. I left that one alone.

It was intermittent at first, but got worse and worse. Easy swap and not terribly expensive.

rodell,
Did you replace the magnets? Or the sensors?

Results are in, the code returned and did not move with the sensor. I'm going to replace the Bank 1 Intake Magnet this week.

I replaced the magnet (right-side intake camshaft) and the P0016 code re-appeared within 1 hour -- after a 30 minute heat-soak.

I've noticed twice, when disconnecting/reconnecting the sensors, that both P0016 and P0018 appear -- I wonder if there's something about disconnecting the sensors that makes them post a code immediately aftewards?

Finally booked it in for repair, and -- oh no -- the worst case scenario. The transmission and subframe are coming out next week for a refit of the balance shaft.

Well I'm totally in denial still, but when the bill comes I'll snap out of it. I'm not feeling much love at all right now (least of all from the Finance Minister).

I feel for you. This issue has been on my mind since I bought my '05 SLK350 (now at 73K miles).

How many miles on your engine when the balance shaft problem popped up?

Are you getting any financial participation by MBUSA (goodwill) on this? Rumor has it that MB has been quietly extending coverage to people with the balance shaft issue, but that's just Internet talk ...

Where is camshaft position sensor a bank 1 located?

A camshaft position sensor (CMP) is essentially a component in the format of a cylinder, which is often located on the outside of the front cover (at the front of the engine under the valve cover).

How many camshaft sensors does a Mercedes c250 have?

Figure 2 The four sensors are located on the end of the cam housings on each head (yellow arrows). Figure 3 On the left side bank you can remove both the intake cam (red arrow) and exhaust cam (yellow sensor) without removing any other components.

What is camshaft position sensor A circuit bank 1?

Diagnostic trouble code P0341 stands for “Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor).” It is triggered when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a problem with the signal being sent by the camshaft position sensor.

Is camshaft sensor B intake or exhaust?

The camshaft position sensor notes the rate at which the camshaft is spinning, and helps the car's computer control things like fuel injection and engine timing. Note that the “B” means that this sensor is located in the exhaust side of the cylinder head.
