2006 honda civic hybrid transmission replacement

I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid with continuously variable transmission (CVT). At the 90k tuneup, the mechanic added 3.5 quarts of the regular automatic transmission fluid. At 110,000 miles, the transmission died,

General consensus online holds that using the wrong fluid is certain to destroy the transmission very quickly. However, this did not happen. Now, the mechanic who put in the wrong transmission fluid claims that CVT's often last only 100k, and therefore does not want to take full responsibility for replacing the transmission.

He suggests that since the transmission lasted another 20k, he is not fully responsible for replacing the transmission, e.g., because it might have died anyway.

  • Are there any statistics for the life expectancy of this device (the CVT)? Online forums are generally skewed toward examples of either long lived transmissions or those that failed.
  • Is there any standard way to assess who is liable for repairs in such a case?

8th & 9th Generation Civic 2006 - 2015 9th Gen 2012 - 2015. 8th Gen 2006 - 2011. 9th Gen Chassis Codes: FB2, FB4, FB6, FG 3, FG4. 8th Gen Chassis Codes: FG1, FG2, FA1, FA3.

2006 honda civic CVT transmission swap to a newer 07 or 08

Hi,

I need some advice about the 2006 Honda hybrid trans, well I am fixing it because my car stop moving suddenly, I was thinking could be the flywheel issue, after I checked the trans oil and found drive belt pieces on it, I removed the trans and inside everything destroyed making more difficult the rebuilt, I found close to my area a newer cvt trans who is 2007 with a good price and I would like to buy it, they offer a year warranty on it, I compare both and look like it will fit, I compare the part number for each coils, sensors and solenoids look similar for years 2006 to 2008, only neutral switch has different part number but they look the same. also start clutch with different part # updated because the 2006 model was defective, I will go ahead with the newer 2007 model and see what happen.

I would like to know if somebody did this before and installed a newer transmission on a 2006 ?

I asked to an Honda dealer tech on justasnwer.com and he confirmed it will fit, no additional work is needed, but I would like to have about your experience, if someone did that before.

thank for your response.

Re: 2006 honda civic CVT transmission swap to a newer 07 or 08

I'm pretty sure I've run into this before and we figured out they will not swap. (changing the internals from newer good unit to older case might be a possibility though)

The 06 has one extra speed sensor, the 07 and later do not have it.
The computers in the 06 will not like the later transmission, they will be looking for a sensor input that won't be present.

Research it: Catalog link to an 06: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...NSMISSION+CASE

Look up the same thing for an 07 and compare quantities used.

The 06 uses a

pair

of speed sensor #13
Later versions only have one of the sensors.

Re: 2006 honda civic CVT transmission swap to a newer 07 or 08

Thanks Ezone,

That is the key !!

2006 honda civic hybrid transmission replacement
, I checked CVT transmission assembly from 2006 to 2011 and 2007 to 2011 are showing discontinued, only 2006 model is available for sale, so that means 2006 will work for all newer years, if the factory is not producing or rebuilt them any more transmissions from 2007 to 2011 is because 2006 CVT trans is the replacement who works for those years.

the difference is only the pick up # 13 who need to be installed in my case, for 2007 to 2011 a plug is located on the same location for the second # 13 pick up, all other internal parts has the same part number on each component, both pick-ups works receiving the signal from the same internal drum.

I am attaching a picture so you can see a 2007 cvt trans who has a plug where should be located the second # 13 pick up.

I can't see it all that well from here, can you determine if that plug is removable? Would a speed sensor slide into that hole and bolt in, so the later trans could be swapped in?

Yes that is the way, that picture is from someone who is selling this trans on craiglist, on that case there is one black pick up and under it a round plastic black plug where should be located the second pick up.
The speed sensor as you says it will slide into the hole and secured with a bolt in and trans can be swapped between years 2006 to 2011.
