2022 jeep compass start/stop battery replacement

Hello All,

I've searched through the forums to try to find the information, however although there has been some writing on this, I haven't been able to filter through all the info to find my issue.

I've owned my 2015 KL since April 2018. I decided to replace the battery as I was sure it was the original battery from 2015 - which it was when I took a look at it. So, I went to my local Costo and purchased the correct size and CCA, etc. in the Kirkland brand. I installed the new battery this past week and everything seems to be working fine, except for the Start/Stop function - on the info screen, it does indicate "Stop/Start not available Battery charging".

The battery is brand new (date code indicates a manufacture code of Aug 2018), and the voltage on the display does indicate +14V. It is not an AGM battery - does this vehicle require an AGM battery?? Is this really the reason why my Start/Stop is no longer working? I called a local Jeep dealership, and they could not give me any info on this as they have not heard this issue before, so I asked them how much a dealer battery would cost, for my VIN it would be CDN$325 - the Costco battery was CDN$140. Of course, they asked me if I wanted to book an appointment for a diagnostic for CDN$140 - I did not book.

Those members in Canada will know about Canadian Tire - they list an AGM battery for CDN$270, and a non-AGM for CDN$210.

Before going through the hassle of returning the Costco (Kirland) battery, does anyone here know if know if this non-AGM battery is really the issue with the Start/Stop not working? Thanks for any help folks!

Take the battery you purchased back, the KL requires an AGM battery, the same size/capacity is not enough. Shame on them for selling it to you.

Since my post, I've replaced the Kirkland (Costco) battery with the OEM one that was in the Cherokee - the original battery was not giving me any problems, I just figured I'd change it out since (I'm guessing) it is the original battery that the 2015 KL was sold with. Now that I've replaced the battery back to OEM, I'm still getting no Start/Stop and still receiving the "Stop/Start not available Battery charging" message. Not sure what's going on here... The original OEM was out of the vehicle only 2 days ago.

I've attached pictures to this post of the OEM battery, and the Kirkland. It's funny how my being proactive has actually caused me some issues.

My start/stop quit working as soon as the battery was 2.5 yrs old with 55,000 miles on it but the battery was still working so i replaced the battery and the start/stop worked again. My 15 battery had a 2 yr warranty so it was getting due lol.

The smaller battery as i understand it is primarily for the ASS (short for the Aut0StopStart) system but could be wrong.

The charging system in these newer vehicles with AGM batteries is incompatible with conventional old school lead acid batteries.

What you might try is disconnecting both batteries for a while, reconnect and see what happens. Then give it some time.

Its also possible the small battery died but that would be a wierd improbable coincidence.

what amazes me is that you would even care about losing the stop/start as much as everyone(including me) hates this super annoying feature... here you find an easy way out of it and you go and fix it! lol

It should be in the same area as the larger battery.
At least thats where it is in my '18 GC.

Still learning about these new Jeeps but it could be possible some of the older ones with ASS or some Jeep models might not have the dual battery configuration.
Maybe someone knowledgeable here can comment on this.

If you disable ASS with the switch, does it still display that message?

One thing you might try if you always use ASS, is to disable it for a few days to allow the battery to charge with long distance drives.

One other thing even though the gauges show 14volts, i would still verify the actual charging voltage at the new AGM battery posts with a digital voltmeter with engine running and also on the smaller battery if you have one somewhere.

Could be possible the charging system got confused trying to charge that conventional lead acid battery the reason i mentioned to disconnect the battery(ies) for 30 minutes or so to reset the PCM.

Now where does the “two batteries for ESS” idea comes from? My 2019 KL only has one battery. That battery powers the ESS....and everything else. The Cherokee is not a Grand Cherokee nor is it a Pacifica....

Well, yesterday morning before starting my Cherokee, I wiggled the wires on the IBS and after the engine warmed up, the start/stop started working again! Now of course, there is more than one variable here - I re-installed the OEM battery 2 days ago, and I wiggle the wires leading to the IBS which is connected to the negative post connection of the battery. So, now I don't know which one - or both actions - might have triggered the ESS ti start working again.

I would still like to replace the battery. I'll make sure to purchased an AGM, and most likely get one from Canadian Tire. Though, I may just wait for a sale. Again, the OEM battery is only 3 years old - when would you change it?

Well.. looks like I wrote my post too soon - I was out today, and the Battery Charging message was on again. ESS did not work all day. If I go out again today, I'll try wiggle the wires from the IBS again, if not I'll have to do it in the morning before going to work.

Yesterday, I replaced the OEM battery with a Motomaster AGM - they were on sale, and I had Canadian Money to spend!

See attached pics of the new battery. When I replaced it, I drove around for a bit and the ESS was not working. This morning driving to work, it's working again. Hopefully when I leave work today to head home the ESS will still be working.

You just replaced the other old school battery with an AGM?
I was under the impression right or wrong that you replaced the battery with an
AGM a while back and still had the issue.

Anyhow, good luck with your stop/start issue which i keep forgetting to disable every time i start up.

Buy the SmartStop OBD2 fixes this problem

I looked at SmartStop but I have a 2018 Jeep Laredo and you can't just plug it in. Its a lot of work to install.

Why is it the “worst design ever”? Some vehicles do not have the option to turn it off, fortunately we do. Since this type of economy enhancer is appearing across the industry (Ford, GM, FCA, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Toyota, etc.) I’d say that Jeep’s take is one of the better ones.

Because its not an option. You have to turn it off every time. I believe that was a requirement for Jeep to get the minuscule, if any, fuel improvement. If there was no ability to turn off the stop/start, I would not have purchased the Jeep. This is a Jeep, not a Toyota Prius.

Every motor vehicle already has a start/stop ignition switch. If I want to turn off the engine in traffic, I can with no help or force from a car manufacturer.

I live in Florida and when it turns off, the air conditioning is reduced. When I pull into the garage it turns off and starts back up when I place it in park. The Jeep turns off when I am waiting to make a left turn in traffic. Because there is no time delay, it immediately turns off when at a stop sign even though the stop is less than 2 seconds.

Its poorly designed, unnecessary and unwanted especially in a Jeep and as the customers that paid for the Jeep, we should have the ability to make the decision, not a paternalistic car manufacturer.
