Transmission Control Module

I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that I am currently building the transmission in. Wanting to swap out the TCM due to things not running right and codes not reading with the analyzer. Problem is late in 1994 Jeep switched from the plastic case 1994 TCM model to the new 1995+ TCM which is a metal case version going forward. There appears to be several different ones used perhaps for different options?? The label on mine is so worn that i cannot read the PN to get the match. It's an 8 digit number starting with 5602......

The problem is there were several of them used for that year and I am looking for someone to tell me the differences between the ECM part numbers
56027716 - ????
56027564 - ????

HELP......which one do i need??

Two things i can think of that might help...

There was a flexplate change in 95.. perhaps it was actually earlier in late 94? Figuring which flexplate you have might lead to which ECM you need.

Parts dept at the dealership may be able to help you with your VIN and mfg date of the Jeep.

UPDATE

Thus far all of the info points to what I already know and therre's been no finite answer. There are multiple TCM's for 94 / 95 and noone nor any website I find or get pointed to clearly defines what all of the optional TCM's are and what their diff are. I'm guessing it has to do with engine size choices and whether its the std. transmission or a lower geared pulling one, or something like that. What i need is a subject matter expert who knows these answers without guessing, and someone who doesn't have the word "maybe" in their vocabulary. Thanks

You used TCU.. in the ZJ's the TCU is integrated into the ECM/ECU etc. Only the very early 93 ZJ's had a seperate TCU, when they had the AW4 trans. Once the 42re was utilized the TCU became integrated. (as far as i know.. can someone confirm?) I could be mistaken here and the OBDI ZJ's may have had a stand alone TCU till 96 and the intro of OBDII.. again anyone?

The different ECM's were dependant upon engine size (I6/V8.. which designated which trans) and whether they had security. In 94 IIRC was the only year they had the 5 speed option, theres another application.

My bud is a parts manager for a Jeep dealership. When the Mrs needed a new ECM i simply emailed him my VIN and he gave me the original number, the later compatible numbers and the Mopar performance number. Then i found a reman'd unit on ebay from a large dismantler for under $100.

Well what I have for sure is an in-line 6 cylinder engine and a 42RE transmission. The Transmission Control Module came off the firewall under the dash and everything I read says it's a TCM not a ECM. What I need to know specifically is how many diff TCM's were used that year and what each of them are for specifically. If anyone on here is a dealer or OEM parts guy that can look up the details based upon my VIN......hey let me know. Thanks

AW4 transmission problems

Not replying, but need to locate my TCU. 96 Cherokee, 4.0L, AW4 Trans. Just replaced the tranny w/ a salvage 88,000 mile. Same problem exists. "Freewheels" like its not in a gear after it's warmed up. I can shut it off, let it sit a couple seconds and can drive off, a few minutes(mph) later, back to 'freewheeling'. Have read several posts, baffled by what hopefully is an 'external' problem maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably an internal issue.

Obviously oil pressure is failing to lock the transmission up.

You could try Lucas. If it helps then its internal. If it does nothing it possibly could be a electrical problem.

Doing it after it gets hot leads me to believe your tranny may be on its last leg.

Looked into putting a used tranny in. Just concerned it won't fix the problem after reading zincman's post

Used trannies are a gamble. I have had two bad ones in a row for the shop I work for.

Honestly its best to remove your tranny after you are certain it needs pulled. And rebuild it.

Tranny kits go for 99-175$. Torque converters are 80-130$. Barring no hard parts are bad, or bushings, etc..... And even if they were they are cheap to replace.

If you can r&r a tranny successfully. Then you can rebuild one.

Under the gun I can do the entire job in a day.

But if its your first time, set aside a couple days for the tranny alone. Ask a lot of questions, and make certain there is not one piece left over.
