When is fathers day in the united states of america

While many of us often struggle to find the perfect gift for dad, others tend to forget when exactly the annual event is.

This year, Father's Day will be on June 19. In the U.S., Father's Day was founded in 1910 thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd, in Spokane, Washington. Dodd's father was a Civil War veteran, William Jackson Smart. He was a widower and raised his six children alone in Washington state.

Dodd went to shopkeepers, churches and government officials to gather support for a day to recognize fathers. She was successful as Father's Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910.

Despite being founded in 1910, it was not until 1972 that the date became an officially recognized holiday in the U.S. There was a lot of pushback from people during the 20s and 30s, and in fact many tried to end both Mother's Day and Father's Day, wishing to replace them with a joint Parents' Day instead.

It was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Proclamation 4127. In this document Nixon wrote "let each American make this Father's Day an occasion for renewal of the love and gratitude we bear to our fathers, increasing and enduring through all the years."

Why Does the Date Change Every Year?

In the United States, Father's Day is every third Sunday of June, so the date changes every year. It's easier to remember that it falls on every third Sunday, instead of trying to memorize specific dates.

Is Father's Day Celebrated on Different Days in Other Countries?

In the United Kingdom, Canada, U.S and India, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.

In other countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe, Father's Day typically occurs on St. Joseph's Day, a Catholic holiday that happens every year on March 19.

Although the first official Father's Day in the U.S. occurred in 1910, the first time an event took place specifically to honor fathers was on July 5, 1908. This was done by a West Virginia church, to honor the memory of 362 men who had died in explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah.

Father's Day History

Father's Day is the day to recognize, honor and celebrate the sacrifices and accomplishments of fathers. In 1910, Washington State Governor declared Father's Day on the 19th of July. It then became a permanent federal holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon proclaimed that the third Sunday in June would be further known as Father's Day. On this day, children celebrate their fathers and father figures to show their love and appreciation.
