To add or subtract fractions you need a common
denominator ... The number on the bottom. We
need the Least Common Denominator (LCD)... the smallest
number that both denominators divide into equally.
our denominators are 4 and 8.
The LCD is 8
So we need to change 1/4 into a fraction
with 8 on the bottom.
(1/4)(2/2) = 2/8
Note that 2/2 = 1 so the actual value
is the same since we multiplied by 1
5/8 - 1/4 = 5/8 - 2/8 = (5-2)/8 = 3/8

Step 1
We can't subtract two fractions with different denominators. So you need to get a common denominator. To do this, you'll multiply the denominators times each other... but the numerators have to change, too. They get multiplied by the other term's denominator.
So we multiply 5 by 4, and get 20.
Then we multiply 1 by 8, and get 8.
Next we give both terms new denominators -- 8 × 4 = 32.
So now our fractions look like this:
Step 3
Last of all, we need to simplify the fraction, if possible. Can it be reduced to a simpler fraction?
To find out, we try dividing it by 2...
Are both the numerator and the denominator evenly divisible by 2? Yes! So we reduce it:
Let's try dividing by 2 again...
Are both the numerator and the denominator evenly divisible by 2? Yes! So we reduce it:
Let's try dividing by 2 again...
Nope! So now we try the next greatest prime number, 3...
Nope! So now we try the next greatest prime number, 5...
No good. 5 is larger than 3. So we're done reducing.
There you have it! The final answer is:What is 1/4 of 5/8? What is the fractional answer to 1/4 of 5/8? What is the decimal answer to 1/4 of 5/8? Here we will explain what 1/4 of 5/8 means and how to calculate it.
1/4 of 5/8 is the same as asking: If you take 1/4 of 5/8, what do you get? Furthermore, 1/4 is 25 percent. Therefore, we are basically solving 25 percent of 5/8 when we are solving 1/4 of 5/8.
To solve the problem, we start by labeling 1/4 of 5/8 like this:
N1/D1 of N2/D2
Then we use this fraction of a fraction formula to solve the problem:
(N1 x N2) / (D1 x D2)
When we enter 1/4 of 5/8 into the formula, we get:
(1 x 5) / (4 x 8) = 5/32
Therefore, the answer to 1/4 of 5/8 in its lowest form is:
1/4 of 5/8 = 5/32
The answer above is 1/4 of 5/8 in fraction form. Below we have converted the answer to decimal form for you:
1/4 of 5/8 = 0.15625
Hint: If you need to figure out a Fraction of Fraction problem like 1/4 of 5/8 in the future, remember that you get the answer by multiplying the numerator together and the denominators together. This is the same as multiplying the fractions together.

5/8 + 1/4 is 7/8.
Steps for adding fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 8 and 4 is 8Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 8
- For the 1st fraction, since 8 × 1 = 8,
5/8 = 5 × 1/8 × 1 = 5/8 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 4 × 2 = 8,
1/4 = 1 × 2/4 × 2 = 2/8 - Add the two like
fractions:
5/8 + 2/8 = 5 + 2/8 = 7/8 - So, 5/8 + 1/4 = 7/8
