The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is de eerste film uit de langverwachte trilogie van Peter Jackson met zijn interpretatie van het blijvend populaire meesterwerk The Hobbit van J.R.R. Tolkien.
Het avontuur volgt de reis van Bilbo Baggins, die wordt meegenomen op een epische zoektocht om het verloren Koninkrijk Erebor van de dwergen terug te winnen uit de klauwen van de angstaanjagende draak Smaug. Nadat hij vanuit het niets is benaderd door Tovenaar Gandalf de Grijze vindt Bilbo aansluiting bij een gezelschap van 13 dwergen die onder leiding staan van de legendarische krijger, Thorin Oakenshield. Hun reis leidt ze in de natuur en door verraderlijke landschappen die krioelen van de Goblins, Orcs en dodelijke Wargs, evenals een mysterieus en sinister figuur die bekend staat als de Necromancer.
Hoewel hun doel in het oosten en in de woestenij van de Eenzame Berg ligt, moet Bilbo eerst ontsnappen aan de Goblin tunnels, waar hij een wezen ontmoet dat zijn leven voorgoed zal veranderen... Gollum.
