Samsung rsg257aars ice maker not filling with water

Model Number RSG257AARS/XAA Brand Samsung Age 6-10 years

I am hoping someone can help me. I have the above refrigerator. It will make ice for a few days and then stop. The problem seems to be with the ice tray not filling completely. If I reset it, it will fill partially (2-3 cubes worth), but that is not enough to make it run through the cycle. If I add water manually (or cycle the reset a few times) it will cycle the cubes on out. However, it is hit or miss on whether or not it will fill correctly on the next cycle. It may take 2-3 times of this to get it "started" making ice again. Then, it quits and starts partially filling again a couple of days later. I have replaced the solenoid water fill valve. That made no difference. It always cycles through properly when reset it hit. Also, I don't think a frozen line is the issue as water always comes out when it cycles (just sometimes not enough). I believe the main PCB controls the water fill solenoid, not the ice maker. Is that correct?

Not sure what to do next. Some thoughts I had:

1.) Would it be possible that a relay is malfunctioning on the main PCB (say a burned contact) that is causing the water fill solenoid to not actuate correctly 100% of the time?
2.) Could the water line be getting partially kinked/unkinked as the freezer door is opened and closed?

Just at a loss as to why this is an intermittent problem.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

No, the voltage for the fill valve is controlled by the ice maker. Check the wires where they go through the door hinge. Look for broken or almost broken wires. Sometimes the twisting or back and forth motion from opening and closing the door can cause the wire/wires to break or almost break inside the wire casing. It can be difficult to tell just by looking. Give the wires a tug to verify. If the wires check good, replace the ice maker. Does your ice maker harness have a 10 pin or 12 pin connector?

Thanks for the info. I looked at wires at the hinge and they seem OK. I took the icemaker out and it has a 12 pin connector (looks like only 10 of the connector slots have wires going to them, though).

Would you happen to have a pinout/schematic of the icemaker connector you could share? Thanks in advance.

OK, so I found the schematic for the RSG257 on ManualsLib. Looks like the 120VAC to the ice maker water inlet valve is coming from the main PCB via CN73. It seems like the ice maker is sending the main PCB a signal and then the main PCB relays the 120VAC over to the valve for a certain number of seconds. I am at a loss on this.

I found the schematic for the RSG257

Can you post a copy of the wiring diagram here?

Yes. I think this should be the right schematic. Thanks again for your help with this!

Actually, it looks like the ice water solenoid is wired directly to the 120VAC line voltage and the PCB is doing a pull down to GND on the other side of it to complete the circuit. I wonder if they are using a transistor or relay to do that on the main PCB and it has just gotten weak.

OK. So, I put the icemaker back in. I ran it through several test cycles and measured the duration the water valve is open and the amount of water coming out. It runs for 2sec and only runs 2oz of water out. What should it do in terms of water valve run time normally?

The fill switch in the ice maker controls the fill and length of time. Knowing Samsung like I do, instead of a mechanical water fill adjustment, it's probably in the service program installed on the MICOM and the reason for going through the board

Thanks. Yes, that is what I was afraid of. 2oz of water is way under what that tray takes to fill. Any thoughts on what I might replace to fix this? Seems like everything is acting normally except for possibly the fill time being too short.

Replace the ice maker:

Why is my ice maker not filling up with water?

Check the refrigerator's filter. When there is no filter, or it is clogged, the ice maker does not get water. Make sure that the filter is in place, and if it has not been changed in more than six months, replace it with a new one.

What tells the ice maker to fill with water?

Once the ice maker has been connected to a power and water source (aka the plumbing line connected to the back of your refrigerator), the ice maker cycle should begin automatically. At the beginning of the cycle, an electrical signal is sent to a water valve to fill the ice mold with water.
