Samsung refrigerator water collecting under crisper drawers

If you look under your empty crisper drawers in your refrigerator and see standing water, that is not normal. In fact, other than perfectly explainable condensation after a refrigerator has been open too long, there should be no moisture inside this appliance at all. So if there is enough moisture for water to be standing underneath the bottom drawers, you need to do a little investigation as to why so you can fix it before it becomes a bigger problem.

The most common reason for standing water in your refrigerator is because there is something wrong with the defrost drain tube. When the defrost runs, it melts excess frost off the evaporator so it doesn’t build up. That water then drips down and out a small drain hole, through a drain tube, and into a drip pan where it will evaporate off. However, because the drain hole and tube are small, if that water collects random bits of food on the way, something that can happen if you don’t clean your refrigerator often, then the drain hole or even the tube can become clogged.

The best way to fix this is actually really simple. You will want to pull your bottom drawers out and located the drain hole. You will want to clear it of debris and run warm water down it. If the water builds up when flushing it out, you may want to run a flexible pipe cleaner through the hole to get out tough blockages.

Don’t forget that after you have flushed out the drain tube you will need to empty the drip pan. The defrost never produces enough moisture to leave a lot of standing water. However, running water to flush the drain tube out will have a lot of trouble evaporating away before mold or mildew start to grow.

In this article, we discuss a Samsung refrigerator leaking water into drawer and how to fix this problem quickly.

Check the following if your Samsung refrigerator is leaking water into the drawer, whether it is the crisper drawer or the deli drawer:

1. Defrost Drain

If your Samsung refrigerator is leaking water into the crisper drawer or even the deli drawer, check the defrost drain. It is probably clogged with ice or dirt.

To determine this, remove everything inside the unit, including the shelves and bins to expose the drain. You will be able to see if there is dirt or ice in the hole.

If it is clogged, get a mixture of water and bleach or water and baking soda. In the place of this mixture, use hot water. It will serve the same purpose.

Now, take a turkey baster or a syringe and squirt the hot water or the solution down the drain. Be sure to be precise in the squirting. This melts the ice or dislodges any dirt blocking the drain. For dirt, you can go a step further to clean the hole by sticking a stiff wire down the hole to remove it.

Additional Information

On some Samsung refrigerator models, the defrost drain can only be accessed if you open the inside back panel of the freezer. It is below the evaporator coils.

Now if the panel is frozen shut, it means everything back there is also frozen, including the coils. You need to loosen the panel first in order to get to the drain.

You can opt for the manual defrost option, where you unplug the refrigerator and allow nature and lack of electric power supply to do their job. It could take as long as 24 or even 48 hours for a full defrost. However, it will get the drain unclogged of ice. But this is a temporary solution.

The ice buildup means something else is wrong; probably another component of the refrigerator has failed. Have a qualified technician ascertain the cause and fix it.

Another option is to melt the ice with a heat source. It is not advisable to do but because it is a safe heat source, using a hair dryer works.

Set it at low heat and direct it to the edges of the back panel to loosen the ice. When it is loose enough, you can poke the mouth of the dryer behind the panel and direct the heat inside. Doing this will melt the ice fast.

When this happens, you can remove the panel and direct the heat at the drain. Alternatively, you can squirt hot water on the ice to melt it. Do it until water runs freely down the hole and you can hear it running into the pan.

A clogged defrost drain will cause water not to flow into the drain pan to be evaporated. With time, the water will become too much and leak into the drawers and even the floor of the refrigerator.

2. Water Filter

To check the water filter, remove it from its housing and inspect it for any damage. If it is damaged, replace it with a filter that is compatible with Samsung refrigerators. This is to ensure a good fit.

Depending on the model of Samsung refrigerator you have, steps for changing the water filter will vary.

Additionally, inspect the water filter housing if the water filter is working fine. If the housing is damaged, only Samsung or a professional repair agent can replace it.

If the water filter is incorrectly installed or is a brand not fit for Samsung refrigerators, it will leak into the unit. The evidence will be seen in the drawers or on the floor. In addition, if the head of the filter is cracked or the housing is damaged, water will leak into the unit.

3. Humidity

Lowering the temperature in the house can help solve the problem if humidity is the cause of the water leaking into the drawer. Use air conditioners or fans to keep the room cool.

Hot weather can reduce the cooling capacity of the refrigerator, leading to condensation inside it. Eventually, there can be leaks due to excess water. Also, excess moisture in the air can add to the water in the unit and leak.

4. Unlevel Refrigerator

Find the leveling legs of the Samsung refrigerator under it, at the front end. With a screwdriver, turn the legs right and left to adjust them. Do this until you can confirm the right adjustments, according to a carpenter’s level.

An improperly leveled refrigerator will have a hard time cooling. A refrigerator has to be a little higher in front than it is at the back in order to cool properly. If this is not so, the unit puts in extra effort to build and maintain a cool temperature.

This could lead to condensation inside the unit and around the coils at the bottom back of the freezer. With time, water starts leaking to the floor, inside and outside.
