WILLIAMSPORT — A Washington County woman has become the first female member of the 83-year-old Potomac Fish & Game Club.
LeeAnna Lewis was voted in by members July 5. She and her husband, James "Jim" Lewis, who is a member, have been active there for 43 years and moved there permanently when they retired 10 years ago.
"So maybe I broke the ice. I'm very appreciative that they thought to vote for me," said LeeAnna, 72.
Each year on the first Sunday in June, the club opens up membership. The number of memberships varies from year to year depending on the number of people who give up their memberships.
Prospective members must be sponsored by a current member. LeeAnna was sponsored by her husband.
Those interested in membership must be present in person and their names are put in a barrel.
Those whose names are pulled from the barrel fill out an application, which must include a check to cover a membership fee and an annual assessment, which is returned if you are not voted in as a member, LeeAnna said.
This is the second year that Lewis' name was pulled for membership. Three other women's names also were pulled this year, but they didn't receive enough votes.
Prospective members have to receive two-thirds of the vote to be voted in.
LeeAnna joins 46 men who also were chosen for membership.
"If you get enough votes, you get in, no matter who you are," club President Jimmy Harp said.
Lewis said she has her official membership card, which entitles her to vote and gives her the option to purchase property at the club on Falling Waters Road near Williamsport. She has been involved with the club's ladies' auxiliary for years.
She said she has received a lot of congratulations from the news of her membership.
With 17-year-old and 20-year-old granddaughters who love spending time at the club, Lewis is grateful that they will have the opportunity to become members in the future.
If women weren't married to a member, they would have access to the club through their father.
"I'm very proud of the fact that I'm the first female member. Thank you for the hugs, smiles and encouragement," Lewis said to those who supported her.
She also is grateful for her family's support. Lewis said her son and daughter-in-law, Darin and Misty Lewis, told her that she made history.
