Mobil 1 high mileage vs extended performance reddit

This may be a stupid question (sorry) but what’s the difference between Mobil 1 regular 0W20 and Mobil 1 “Advanced Fuel Economy” 0w20? I change my oil every 5-7k km in a 2015 Honda CRV.

Is the labeling/advertisements just all marketing? Or is there a specific one I should get? I was in the store and I saw the “Extended performance” but I didn’t get it because it said for engines 120k km and over. My CRV has about 97k km.

I opted in buying the advanced fuel economy as I couldn’t find the regular full synthetic. But please let me know if there’s truly a difference or all for marketing and would it do any harm if I use the advanced fuel economy rather than the regular full synthetic.

Hello! Vehicle is a 2016, Accord Coupe, V6.

My car is closing on the 75k mark, regarding oil change I currently use a full syntethic extended performance from mobil one every 5k. Should I switch to the high milage one now or can I remain using the normal one? I'm in the fence of adding extra chemicals to the engine such as additives or sealers, so I'm curious what you guys think. After doing some research everyone recommends it but these websites are mobil one, valvoline, etc lol.

Just changed my oil using 6 quarts of mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage extended performance (which is good for 20k miles or 1 year. I thought I had some of the same left in another bottle but realized after using the remaining 1.6 quarts that it was mobil 1 full synthetic truck and suv high mileage(rated for 10k miles). I used 6 of the extended and 1.6 of the truck and suv. Should I still go with the 20k guarantee or 10k? I used to do oil changes on my v8 4runner every 5k before I started using this. Have had great performance from mobil 1 extended.

Just curious. My 2015 Subaru is at 60k miles. Have heard all sorts of recommendations.

Side question: does full synthetic 0w20 high mileage? I can't seem to find any at any of the chain stores. Thanks!

Edit: thanks for all the advice guys! I'm diligent about oil changes and have no leaks yet, so I'll keep doing what works and hold off on high mileage. Thanks again!

They haven't convinced me that high mileage oil is anything more than a marketing ploy.

From what I understand they add some additive that swells the seals so the leaks slow down, or if it's light enough that it stops.

I definitely see where you’re coming from but even oil changes every 1000 miles can’t prevent rubber seals from breaking down which is all high mileage oil claims to help prevent, whether or not it works I don’t know.

High mileage formula is BS. The best thing you can do is use the money you save and just do more frequent changes with regular synthetic oil.

Also I’ve always used Mobil1 0W-20 synthetic in my 02 Outback Sport and it has over 300k with no issues. Both Mobil1 0W-20 advanced economy (NA engines) and 5W-30 extended performance (turbo engines) both exceed Subaru’s oil specifications.

The high mileage formula contains wax, which is supposed to melt while the engine is running and congeal around leaks when the engine cools off. If you're not leaking, you don't need high mileage formula.

My 96 EJ22 with 250,000 miles runs Mobil1 0W40. A well maintained engine doesn't need high mileage oil. It does nothing special except have seal conditioners and be a little bit thicker in grade. Keep running a good synthetic and you'll be fine.

My car has been running with 5W30 fully synthetic for 350,000km (about 220k miles). The oil has been changed every 15000km (about 9k miles) and there is not a single oil leak.

The car is a 2009 VW Passat 2,0tdi for those who wonder.

It's recommended to switch at 75k miles. Though, truthfully, my Subaru's are over 200k miles with regular synthetic. No leaks, no burning.

Mobil is a big no in Boxer engines. It has been highly documented to shear and cause burning issues.

I try to fix the leaks before I use high mileage oil. Unless it's a rear main seal leak, then I use high mileage oil. Got a truck that has 250k miles and is using full synthetic and it doesn't leak a drop of oil.

Valvoline full synthetic with Max Life... basically the best of both worlds. I own a shop and really have looked into this. I personally use this in my vehicles.

After reading all the posts here, I would suggest that if you are going to use a fully synthetic oil e.g. Mobil, then perhaps use any cheaper oil that is certified LL04, this the long life oil that BMW use.

I managed a facility that did 6-7000 oil changes per MONTH. I worked with some of the top end oil people in the industry for over 13 years. I never heard of the issue. I did google it after reading this and still not convinced. But, there’s always Amsoil and royal purple... 👍
