Technology and power of the 2019 Honda CR-V

However, if you are looking for an SUV to drive not only in your day to day life, but also to take on vacations, then the 2019 Honda CR-V is more fitted than the Mazda CX-3. Sure, it’s a bit pricier, but in the end, the 2019 Honda CR-V is more versatile when it comes to power, space, and towing.

The CX-3 has standard Whiplash-Reducing Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash-Reducing Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The CR-V doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the CX-3 and the CR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mazda CX-3 is safer than the Honda CR-V:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the CX-3 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 35 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The CR-V is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2021.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the CX-3’s reliability 38 points higher than the CR-V.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2019 Auto Issue reports that Mazda vehicles are more reliable than Honda vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mazda second in reliability. Honda is ranked 12th.

Engine

As tested in Motor Trend the Mazda CX-3 is faster than the Honda CR-V:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the CX-3 FWD gets better fuel mileage than the CR-V FWD CVT (29 city/34 hwy vs. 28 city/34 hwy).

Tires and Wheels

The CX-3’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CR-V LX’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The CX-3 has engine speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The CX-3 AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the CR-V Touring AWD pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The CX-3 AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the CR-V Touring AWD (27.6 seconds @ .66 average G’s vs. 28.3 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the CX-3’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the CR-V’s (34.8 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

Chassis

The Mazda CX-3 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 600 pounds less than the Honda CR-V.

The CX-3 is 1 foot, 1.8 inches shorter than the CR-V, making the CX-3 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the CX-3 AWD is quieter than the CR-V Touring AWD (39 vs. 40 dB).

Passenger Space

The front step up height for the CX-3 is 3 inches lower than the CR-V (16” vs. 19”). The CX-3’s rear step up height is 2 inches lower than the CR-V’s (16” vs. 18”).

Ergonomics

The CX-3 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The CX-3’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The CR-V LX’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the CX-3 has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The CR-V doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the CX-3 owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the CX-3 with a number “8” insurance rate while the CR-V is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the CX-3 is less expensive to operate than the CR-V because typical repairs cost much less on the CX-3 than the CR-V, including $11 less for a water pump, $5 less for a muffler, $253 less for a starter, $174 less for a fuel pump, $8 less for front struts and $37 less for a power steering pump.

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Mazda CX-3 and the Honda CR-V, based on reliability, safety and performance.

However, most complaints about the CX-3 have to do with the cabin and trunk area being too small. This segment is wildly popular, but it has to tow a thin line. Make it too big and, well, it's too big, but make it too small, and you might as well have bought a sedan that is better on fuel and more fun to drive.

The Mazda CX-3 Reliability Rating is 4.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 2nd out of 7 for subcompact SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $345 which means it has excellent ownership costs.
