The Linux command line is a text interface to your computer. Often referred to as the shell, terminal, console, prompt or various other names, it can give the appearance of being complex and confusing to use.

How long does it take to become proficient in Linux?

Generally, experience has shown that it usually takes some 18 months to become proficient in a new technology. You will be doing useful work very quickly, but it takes time to connect the dots. Definitely recommend going with python / Perl / ruby as your “scripting language of choice” rather than bash.
