On Wednesday nights, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where I work, holds a youth program called LOGOS. Every night before the kids go up to learn from their wonderful teachers, we have a dinner. After everyone washes up, I am blessed to be “cool” enough to sit at the kids table. If any of you are youth pastors, you know, this is a BIG deal. So before dinner I asked if any of the kids had heard the song “We Will Rock You” by Queen. And they responded with a “Duh Erica, everyone knows that song”. Of course. So when I told them that our new prayer we were going to learn was to the tune of “We Will Rock You” and they got to poud on the table, they were OVERJOYED! So, we prayed. And as we sat down with our yummy dinners, I asked the kids what they thought about the prayer. I got many of the same answers, “It was totally awesome”, “I can’t wait to do that again till next week”, and “I am going to show my family that one when we eat dinner tomorrow”. Then, sweet little Sohpia, said quietly. “I didn’t like that Jesus had blood on His face… That’s kind of creepy”. As a youth pastor, I really didn’t know how to reply. Of course I believe Jesus had blood on His face, he was tortured and beaten for each of us, but how do you explain that to a 9 year old?

This is true for so many people in our lives, especially non-believers. It’s hard to explain who Jesus is to us now, and what He has done for us then, and what He gave up for us. And even though it can be uncomfortable and sometimes we think our words will never do Jesus justice, it will always be important to take time to glorify God in all ways possible.

Jesus left the comfort of heaven, to come to a world filled with anger, hurt, and hate. He left the only perfect bliss, for the exact opposite. He left the house of God, for you. Jesus came to this world, so he could be beaten, torturned, scolded, hated, so that each of our sins could be diminished. He took up the cross so that our brokenness could be kept with Him always. THIS is why, we may know the love of our Savior, the love of our father. This is why we have hope, and peace, and GRACE. And without glorifying Jesus, and telling His stories, spreading the word that WE HAVE BEEN SAVED, the world is left with broken distruction.

The good news is, God sent each and every one of us, to spread the good news. And sometimes, we feel unable to speak, unable to be uncomfortable. Trust me, it’s normal. BUT With the love for God pouring from your heart, and trust that he will equip you with words to say and action to move, you will be able to fulfill more than ever imagined. For even if your words can touch a single person, you have changed the world for the better.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commended you. And surley I am with you always, to the very end of the age” Matthew 28:19-20
