The Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon and 5K attract thousands of runners and walkers eager to share in the holiday spirit and give thanks for their health and fitness. Come celebrate this Thanksgiving Day with the Atlanta Track Club and earn your turkey! Show Along with its July 4th Peachtree Road Race, Atlanta’s Thanksgiving Day half-marathon is the granddaddy of the now-long list of road running events in Georgia. Both the half-marathon and the 5K take runners along a course that retraces a number of the steps of the marathon route used for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, which offers numerous challenging hills through Atlanta’s city streets. The starting line for the half marathon begins along Hank Aaron Drive in the shadow of Turner Field, where runners gathering a the starting line will be able to see a tremendous blown-up photograph of the ball that “Hammerin’” Hank Aaron hit to notch his 715th career home run and become the then-all-time home run leader in Major League Baseball. Course highlights From the start and finish line at Atlanta’s Turner Field, the home of baseball’s Atlanta Braves, runners follow an out-and-back course that takes them through the city’s downtown and Midtown neighborhoods, as well as through historic areas like Cabbagetown and the Sweet Auburn district, and Piedmont Park and the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Runners should expect plenty of hills through the city, as Atlanta’s terrain features plenty of them.
