    Product Description

HP Trans Oil offers ultra-high film strength and shear stability to minimize transmission wear, while its high thermal stability prevents foaming and premature oil breakdown.

Special anti-friction additives allow smoother shifting, while minimizing drag and power loss. Anti-shear additives increase clutch life, reducing clutch slippage.

good afternoon all, i have a 1996 cr250 that i just picked up and i have searched on here for what oil to put in the trans. some searches say gear oil and some say 10w40 and some say they are similar. can i run the Honda HP 80w/85w in the trans or do i need a 10w40 cycle oil? are they very different?

Use the cheapest stuff you can get your hands on. If the bike shifts OK and the clutch works well, you're all set. Type-F ATF is popular too. Changing the oil frequently is far more important than what is put in there.

I have been running Bel-Ray Gear Saver Motorcycle Tansmission Oil SAE 80W on my 2003 CR250 since I bought my bike and it has been working great for me.

97 CR 250.... I use HP4 (gold bottle) for tranny oil. And HP2(blue)for pre-mix and had no problems.

I used to always use the Honda HP gear oil, and recently switched to Rotella T, cant tell a difference in shifting, but the Rotella is much cheaper.

    +1 on the Rotella.

I've been running it in my son's CR85R as well as my CRF450R and previous CRF450X.

I tore down my sons bike to do tha top end last summer, and just did the clutch a couple weeks ago. Everything inside looks great

Well, I have a similar question - related. I had run 20W 50 in my 01 cr250r and it worked great. Then switched to that Honda HP stuff, red bottle. Didn't like it. Felt like it was harder to shift. May drain it out and take a look. Could be coincidence, like maybe I need a new clutch, but it doesn;t feel like it is slipping. Anybody else that DOES NOT like the red HP tranny oil bottle?

    Thanks

Rottella. Used it for ever, in every vehicle I've had. Never had a issue. Just change it often, that's the biggest thing.

HP trans or Maxima, whatever I can get cheaper. When you change out your clutch go to steel pressure plates and you'll foul your oil less quickly.

Have used Honda HP and maxima 80wt. Both excellent. The maxima seems a little more viscous, shifting is excellent with both products. My personal feeling is I find slightly faster clutch wear with the Honda oil. I change oil very frequently. These are both easily found at local mx shops. Also a thumbs up to klotz oils as well, but they are usually a mail order item for me at least.

No, Don't use ATF... You would think you can, but it does not have the cooling properties as regular oil does. The life of your clutches and parts will thanks you..

You mean the wet clutch and gears that are just like that in an automatic transmission. My clutch and parts have already thanked me for using ATF. 😢
