How to replace battery in ford f150 key fob

The key fob battery for my Ford F150 must be dead because the key fob has completely stopped working. I got a new battery but I’m not sure how to change it out. How do I replace the key fob battery for my F150?

A dead key fob is frustrating, for sure, but happily, the battery replacement is an easy fix! The exact instructions for replacing a Ford F150 key fob battery will depend on if you’re rocking a fob with a physical key or a smart key.

To replace the battery in a Ford F150 physical key fob:

  • Open the key using the small button on the face of the key fob
  • Use a small flat head screwdriver or some tool like it and insert the flat tip into the side of the key fob where the key just was
  • Gently wedge the back casing open
  • Use your tool to pry out the old battery, but be careful not to hit any circuitry that may short out your remote
  • Insert the new battery with the positive side facing up
  • Snap the cover back on

To replace the battery in a Ford F150 smart key fob:

  • Press the rectangular button on the physical key at the bottom of the key fob to release the key from its slot
  • Insert a small flat tool into the slot right above where the key just came out of and twist gently to pop open the cover
  • Use your tool to pry out the old battery, being careful not to hit the circuitry and short out the remote
  • Insert the new battery with the positive side facing up
  • Snap the cover back on and reinsert the physical key
