How to make a pie chart with two sets of data in excel

Pie Chart is a circular chart that shows the data in circular slices. Sometimes, small portions of data may not be clear in a pie chart. Hence we can use the ‘pie of pie charts in excel for more detail and a clear chart. The pie of pie chart is a chart with two circular pies displaying the data by emphasizing a group of values. In Excel, there are different types of pie charts to understand. They are: 

1. Pie
2. Exploded Pie
3. Pie of Pie
4. Bar of Pie
5. Pie in 3-D
6. Exploded Pie in 3-D

Let’s understand the Pie of Pie Chart in Excel in more detail.

Creating Pie of Pie Chart in Excel:

Follow the below steps to create a Pie of Pie chart:

1. In Excel, Click on the Insert tab.

2. Click on the drop-down menu of the pie chart from the list of the charts.

3. Now, select Pie of Pie from that list.

Below is the Sales Data were taken as reference for creating Pie of Pie Chart:

The Pie Chart obtained for the above Sales Data is as shown below:

The pie of pie chart is displayed with connector lines, the first pie is the main chart and to the right chart is the secondary chart.  The above chart is not displaying labels i.e, the percentage of each product.  Hence, let’s design and customize the pie of pie chart.

Designing the Pie of Pie Chart in Excel:

Follow the below steps to design a pie of pie charts:

• The design tab will be available by right-clicking on the chart. 
• Click on the Design tab for creating labels and to style the chart with different colors. We can choose any chart layout and any chart style from the drop-down list of designs in excel as shown in the below figure.

Here, we have chosen the first layout for our pie of pie chart as shown below:

Changing the Data in the Secondary pie:

We can change the data that needs to be displayed in the secondary pie.

To add data in the secondary pie from the first pie, right Click on the second pie and choose Format Data Series.

Here, the data series is split by percentage value and also customized the second plot by having values less than 15%. Now the pie of pie chart is formatted as follows:

In this way, a pie of pie chart can be customized in different ways.

Most people think pie charts are limited to a single set of values, but here is a way to create a pie chart based on two columns of values.

It is a bit tricky to see two series of values charted on separate axes within one chart, but the effect is well worth the effort. To see how this works, first create a basic pie chart. Put some data in the range B1:C5, and then select that range and click the Chart Wizard button in the toolbar. In Step 1 of the Wizard, under Chart Type, select the first pie chart. Now work your way through the Chart Wizard, making any changes you need. When you reach Step 4, make sure you place the chart as an object in the current worksheet.

Next, select the pie chart, right-click it, and select Format » Source Data » Series. Click Add to add another series. Select cell D1 for the Name and cells D2:D5 for the Values, then click OK. You'll get the chart shown in figure.

Double-click the pie itself again to select it, select Format Data Series, choose the Axis tab, and plot the series on the secondary axis. Click OK. The pie chart still looks the same on the surface, but it isn't the same underneath.

Select the pie, and while pressing the left mouse button, drag out from the center, then release the left mouse button. This will create the exploded effect you are looking for, as shown in figure.

By exploding the pie, you will not only separate the two axes, revealing the second pie chart, but also compress the pie chart plotted on the secondary axis, allowing you to see both charts.

Now, select each slice of pie in turn and drag them back to the center of the pie, producing the chart shown in figure. Remember that two slow clicks will highlight an individual piece of the pie.

Join all the pieces of the pie again, and you will have a fully functional pie chart plotting two series of data on separate axes. Now you can color and format accordingly.
