How to edit the subject line in gmail

Gmail lets you change the subject of a reply or forwarded email, but the option is a little hidden. This is particularly useful whenever you must reply with “UNSUBSCRIBE” in the subject line to be taken off a mailing list.

To do this in the web version of Gmail, click the “Reply,” “Reply All,” or “Forward” option to start composing your reply or forwarded email.

Click the button to the left of the “To” field and then click “Edit Subject.”

Gmail will show you an email compose pane with an editable subject field. Change it to whatever you want—you could add the word “UNSUBSCRIBE,” remove the “Fwd:” from a forwarded email, or write a new subject line.

That’s all you have to do. Click “Send” to send the email when you’re done composing it.

On the Gmail app for your phone, this is even easier. While composing a reply or forwarded email, the Subject line will appear and be editable above the body of the email. Just scroll up and change the subject to whatever you like.

Google Mail: Edit Subject of a Conversation Thread

In Google Mail, you can change the subject of a mail conversation that has already been started. When you do this and send the email, the recipients will receive the email in their inbox as a new conversation.

Note:
If you simply want each email you receive (including those with the same subject line) to appear as a new conversation thread, see the Google Mail: Turn Off Conversation View help page.

  1. Navigate to https://mail.google.com.
  2. Log in to Google Mail using your email address and password.
  3. Click the mail conversation you want to reply to with an edited subject.
  4. In the text box with the message "Click here to Reply or Forward," click "Reply."
  5. To the left of the name of the person you are replying to, click the dropdown arrow. A pop-up menu appears.
  6. From the pop-up menu, click "Edit subject." Gmail’s new compose/reply window will appear for you to type your reply.
  7. To edit the subject, click the cursor into the subject field and make the desired changes.

Note:
If you would like to change the conversation thread of a message that you are forwarding, you can complete these same steps. In step 5, simply click to "Forward" the message instead of reply to it.

How to edit the subject line in gmail

Here at Dito, we all use and love conversation threading in Gmail. Our replies are grouped with their original message, allowing us to always be up to speed on the topic of the conversation. Since these messages are grouped by subject, what if the conversation changes direction and no longer relates to the original subject matter? Should we start from scratch? Hit compose, add our recipients, and start a new thread? An easier way to go about this is simply editing the subject. In this month’s Pro Tip, we will show you how to change the subject line, which in turn, starts a new conversation thread.

How To: Change the Subject Line in a Conversation Thread

  • Open the conversation, scroll to the bottom, and select ‘Reply.’ (note: you can also edit the subject line when choosing to forward or reply-all)
