What happens when a loved one dies and you need to delete his or her Cash App account? Here are some quick tips to seamlessly delete your account from the internet.

Steps to Permanently Delete Your Own Cash App Account

Deleting your online presence might involve a lot of work — you might need to gather your Social Security number, driver’s license, password, logins, and more. Luckily, deleting your Cash App account isn’t very hard.

Here's how:

  • Don't delete the app
  • Transfer the money
  • Close the account

Tip: Ensure that your digital accounts are taken care of according to your wishes by making a will. You can easily create one from home with an online will maker like Trust & Will.

Don’t delete the app

It’s tempting to just drag and drop the app into the trash. But that doesn’t completely take care of your account. This only means you’ve removed an app from your phone.

Your account is still active and all your banking information will still be on file. That means that if you delete your account due to security worries, those concerns won’t go away.

Transfer the money

If there’s still money in your account, transfer it to the banking institution already linked to your account. To do this, view your balance in the Cash App.

Underneath your balance, there will be two options. One is “Add Cash.” The other is “Cash Out.” Tap on “Cash Out” and choose how you want your money sent to you.

Close the account

Deleting your account is very easy if you have the app open. You won’t even need to log in! Once you’ve cashed out, tap the account menu icon. This will look like an avatar on any other social media site you’re familiar with. This brings up a full menu of options — tap “Support,” which is indicated by a question mark icon. This brings up a menu of options — tap “Something Else.”

Next, tap “Account Settings” and you’re almost there. Tap “Close My Cash App Account.”

To prevent any mistakes, tap “Confirm Closing My Cash App Account.” Once these steps are complete, you should receive a confirmation. Depending on the contact information linked with your account, you should receive an email or a text confirmation.

Make sure you get the confirmation before you delete the app. You won’t want to re-download the app all over again.

Steps to Permanently Delete a Cash App Account for Someone Who Died

There’s not much security for account deletion on Cash App, so deleting a loved one’s account should be easy. If not, the support team can help you. Deleting your loved one's cash app account is an important part of the post-loss checklist, and it keeps their digital legacy secure. By taking a few steps below, you can keep everything safe and secure.

Here's how:

  • Find your loved one's password
  • Contact Cash App's support team

Tip: You can continue a loved one's digital legacy with a virtual memorial on a platform like GatheringUs. They even have specialists who can guide and support you through the planning process.

Find your loved one’s password

You probably don’t need the password to your loved one’s Cash App account. You might just need to get into his or her phone. Most people don’t store their phone PIN in a password manager. What else can you do?

Try running some number combinations — maybe a child’s birthday or an anniversary date. Remember that some people swipe in a pattern to unlock their phones.

If none of those options work, you have two options. You can either contact Cash App or the phone company to get it unlocked. If Cash App is the only thing you need to get rid of, it might be easier to just contact Cash App’s support team.

Contact Cash App’s support team

Can’t get into your loved one’s phone? Contact the Cash App support team and explain your situation. You might need to have banking information on hand to prove your claim.

Cash App Account Deletion FAQs

Still got questions? Here are some tips that might help.

How do you delete Cash App from your iPhone or Android phone?

If you’ve already deleted your account, you just need to delete the app.

On Android, push down on the app to select it. Then, start to drag it toward the top of the screen. A trash bin icon will come up. Drag the app over the trash can and release it. You might have to confirm whether you actually want to delete the app.

Push down on the app on an iPhone. If you have a newer version of an iPhone, you’ll need to tap “Rearrange Apps” when it pops up. After you’ve selected this, your apps will start shaking on the screen. As they shake, delete boxes will come up. Tap on the one associated with the Cash App, and that will remove the app.

Can you delete the payment history on Cash App?

There are lots of reasons you might want to delete the payment history. You might be concerned about privacy or security.

But due to the nature of your app, you can’t delete the history. No one else can see who you’ve paid, what the payment was for, or the amount given. It’s private information. That means it can only be viewed if someone is logged into your account.

Can you block or delete friends or contacts on Cash App?

You might want to block people on the app for security reasons. To do this, tap the profile icon. It will look like an avatar and will show up on the home screen. Out of the resulting options, tap “Privacy and Security.”

Once you’re on this screen, scroll down until you see “Incoming Requests.” This will allow you to turn this setting on or off.

Uncover a Digital Legacy

Cleaning up someone else’s digital legacy is hard. You want to make sure that you haven’t missed anything to prevent any issues with security or identity theft in the future. Unfortunately, your loved one may not have started end-of-life planning.

What accounts did he or she have? Where are the passwords? Prioritize financial accounts so you can start cleaning up your loved one’s digital life one category at a time.
