Demmanding, stressful, lack of training and not a good choice

I started on the dock part time. I was told I would be immediately in rolled in the CDL program. That took 6 months. Management is a joke they do not take work place concerns serious. If you're in the click your as good as gold if not, they'll find ways to get rid of you. My productivity numbers were at the top. At the top as in number 1 every week on motor moves per hour. No damages to freight. Trailers loaded. Anything you could excel at I did. Mean while there were other employees that couldn't meet the bare minimum MMPH quota and were rewarded while the hard workers got punished. They would much rather keep the lazy/unproductive employees that chose to talk and goof around rather the ones who were focused, productive and determined to get the task done. That's just the dock part of work. As far as being a driver it gets even worse. They put you in a different truck every day. Demand that you use equipment even if it isn't safe to use. Have you stay out longer so people in the "click" can leave earlier. Ask unreasonable demands while you're on your route. Management would give you the worst route for punishment if you did something that upset them. Management doesn't take responsibility and acts like children when it comes to accountability. I've been told I couldn't leave when I made it clear in the morning I had to leave at a certain hour. The worst thing that happened to me was getting charged with a preventable accident when it was out of my hands. A police report

ProsPTO and cool uniforms

ConsHorrible Management, favoritism, lies on top of lies, laziness is rewarded the business it's self is not accountable.

very demanding, not a friendly place to work

forced dispatch company mostly newer trucks to drive but not maintained well demanding amount of work not considerate treats you poorly and no respect pushes safety and legal limits to much leaves no room for error micromanages everything drivers do becoming much to dependent on technology to work simple tasks the phrase, constantly wants to put 10 lbs of stuff into a 5 lbs rated bag! --------referring to how much freight they want us to fit into a --------trailer, its never enough and they want all trailers to weigh max ------weight or100% physically full and it can't always work like that. I can't handle the demand of work overnight of driving over 500 miles a day from Mount Vernon to Portland and back to Mount Vernon and work the dock in Portland loading and unloading and loading my own freight and then driving back through Seattle / Tacoma traffic, I just can't handle it anymore! Since XPO has taken over CON-WAY things have become impossible and very poorly managed, just because you have some random degree (computer science for example) XPO thinks they are smart lets put them in-charge even though they have no truck driving experience or no freight experience.... well no they will not figure it out! stepping over dollars to pick up dimes! I NEED A SLOWER PACE OF LIFE!

ProsI was hired me with no truck driving experience, I already had my CDL Class A

Consmanagers won't listen or take advice from drivers, don't care about the freight, don't care about the safety of the drivers

Great Pay But Treated Like a Number

The pay was great. All line drivers are required to work the dock driving a forklift to load/unload trailers for a few hours before your line run every night. Expect to work 70+ hours every week your first couple years until you get enough seniority to get off the extra board. You can earn 6 figures, but they will work you to death to get it. You might be there a few years before you get the line run you want. You might be a daytime driver, which is local pick-up and delivery. They make less money but it's daytime hours. When you're new, you're at the bottom of the seniority list, so you will get stuck with the worst jobs and the worst schedules whether day or night. If you can work hard and be patient, the pay is excellent. But be ready to be treated like a number. They don't really care about you as a person. If you work hard consistently, they might work with you if you need time off, but don't expect it. Bottom line is they are a freight company, and they expect you to work to increase their revenue. Other than that, they don't care about you.

Note to Drivers with CDL - You are really applying to be a Fork Lift Operator!

This is NOT a union shop, however it is run the same as if it were a Union shop. The bottom line if you are a driver (CDL A) avoid them all together. The senior people get all the best City Routes and Line Haul routes. Additionally, they higher you as a new driver and expect 90% of the job working as a Fork Lift operator at one of their terminals. So a typical day (being a new driver and at the bottom of their list)....You actually drive third shift on line haul for one hour....then 10 hour on a Fork Lift. Also note that at the end of your shift since you are new, they force you as a driver to 'stay over' and load trailers with the Fork Lift for the next morning. If you are a driver you are in realty applying to be a 'Fork Lift Operator'. I would NOT recommend them to anyone, they have a very high turn over rate. Signed: 'Past Driver'

You will work long shifts so be prepared

As a new driver you need to know your actually going to work the dock more then drive a truck. Out of a 14 hour shift I spent 10 hours on the dock and 4 hours actually doing deliveries. It’s all about seniority. They aren’t Union but operate identical. It’s all about how long you have been there. And to get off of the dock it’s going to take at least 5 years. So understand if you apply for a driver job it’s actually a dock worker job. And who knows what time you go in until they text you in the morning. What time do you get off? Who knows whenever the trucks are loaded. My particular manager was a very good guy though I will say.. Not his fault I was hired under false pretenses prior to him taking over. Just make sure you have a full understanding of the job before you take it.

ProsGood pay and local

ConsLong hours no clue on start times or end times

Used to be good place to work.

Good pay and inexpensive benefits. Good fleet managers. Good miles when they're there to be had. After over 5 years of safe OTR driving, I went to a local position at Jacobson's request for a new contract they had in TX. After 7 months they dropped the contract, saying they were not making any money (they had seriously underbid to get the contract) and released all drivers working on that contract. I was 1 of 2 with over 5 years with them, there were several with over 3 years with them. We were still driving the trucks we drove OTR, they wouldn't have had to find trucks for us. They didn't tell us in person they were letting us go; they didn't tell us by phone or any of several other methods individually or as a group at their disposal. They sent an email to the lady working in the office and left it to her to tell all the drivers.

Overall not a bad company.

I enjoyed my work thought most days were easy in comparison to the labor-intensive jobs I’ve done previously. didn’t have to many complaints except the home/life balance. You work long days and get off late and starting out you will most likely be on the flex board unless you go to nights. And flex board is basically on call every day they text you in the morning what time to come in until you gain some seniority which could take several years depending on your location. So if you’re ok with putting in your time to gain some seniority than its not a bad job. Never had any problems with management thought everyone was fair and respectful but stern.

ProsGood benefits top out in pay in 2yr

ConsLong days. Never knowing what time you getting off

Ltl is ltl

Poor management, favoritism big time, clicks. Lots of dock work for new guys dirty docks, dock plates manual 50/50 if they work, dock bosses could care less, jeeps not maintained, dock floors beat your spine in, tires on jeeps uneven from dock workers spinning them off, tractors are well maintained trailers not so much roll up doors are awful, had supervision make drivers take HazMat when printers are down lie tell them it's okay, they'll text it to them, like most LTL it's about moving freight all that matters drivers 1st responder's come second, drive tires they run low 3/32 if it snows heavy call in sick times I couldn't get out of stall without putting chains on.

Not worth the heartache

LTL environment. Gave that place 12 years. I now wait on my Social Security Disability. I can tell you, if it seems like management doesn’t care about you, it’s because they don’t. If your not in the inner circle, save yourself the effort and quit. If you decide to stay, make management document everything no matter how bad their attitude is about it. My last days there my health involving my disabled veteran status took a turn for the worse. attempted to ask senior leaders for assistance, I’ve never been more degraded in my life. Protect yourself

ProsNone

ConsHR and other senior leaders will laugh and make fun of you if you attempt to address a problem

Great place to work if you can cope with the type of work involved.

I worked at Xpo (coop) Andover for 2 1/2 years and loved my time there. If your looking for a job just sitting on your bum driving from a to b then don’t apply but if your looking for a rewarding driving job where every day is different then work here!! The relationship with management is what you make of it! I got on well with people there, they’ve got a tough job to do so do have their bad days but all in all they are a good bunch of people. I’d only say the people above the TM and supervises are disconnected from the rest of us. The important meetings that involve drivers salary has been put on hold because of Covid yet others meetings to change rotas etc manage to still go ahead. The real negative for me was when they changed the rotas. For me personally that meant having 1 weekend of in 3 to about 1 weekend in every 4 months!! It was all done without anyone’s personal life’s considered. Xpo are coops customer and does exactly what they want them to do. In saying that if you get on with your job and do what your asked to do then it’s a fantastic job. You do anything between 1-10 drops! But average 4/5 a day. You get put on a set starting time which are - 00.00-04.00, 04.00-07.00, 07.00-10.00, 10.00-13.00 & 13.00-16.00. If your class 1 you could be trunking to one of the other depots. The drivers are a really good bunch of lads and all look out for each other. It’s a 48 hour contract and if you go over that you get paid overtime of time and a third.

ProsPay, other drivers, hours.

ConsTreatment of lower staff by top management.

If you want a social/work life balance then this ain't for you.

The over time here is forced if you say no they start crying Pallets are over loaded with weight some are well over a tonne on a regular basis. You tell the managers but they don't care about your safety. Their answer is when you get to the shop take some off and handball it...... Warehouse are on a bonus scheme the more they pick the more they get paid hence why the pallets are loaded like mushrooms with one layer of wrap. Heavy stuff on top of the light stuff crushing items below. It's a joke you have to see it to believe it. No electric trucks just no good manual trucks. Pallets are always badly wrapped and look they were stacked and then loaded by Stevie Wonder. Stores don't help you they try and get away with doing nothing and watch you strain with the heavy pallets. ( A few stores help out but that's rare) Management are a joke complete two faced jobs worth individuals. Positive is the money but you have to put the hours in which means your work sleep work sleep which is no life. The rate should be a lot more for what you do. No unsocial hours pay if you start before 6. Come to think of it I don't even know why i'm still here. I will start looking else where.

ProsYou get left alone to an extent

ConsLong hours, force overtime, bad loads, Heavy pallets, unsafe pallets, NO health and safety for drivers. Heavy cages with broken wheels, working weekends, two face management, They love sacking people here for silly reasons.

Avoid avoid avoid.

Poor place to work, as an Englishman I definitely feel like an outsider working there. Cant wait to get out. Vehicle are shabby piles of scrap metal, legal but shabby. You are definitely just a number. Absolutely no perks even though the job advert promises this and its a 48 hour week not 45 hours. Your working week starts and finishes on a Sunday but if you do more than 48 hours in a consecutive working week you may or may not get overtime if you finished your last working day on the Monday or Tuesday as it then falls into a new week i.e. past Sunday the end of the week. Sneaky clawbacks from these cynical 3PL companies in there race to the bottom of wages for drivers. Been a class 1 driver for 32 years, hate driving now and its all down to companies like these that have forced down wages over the years undercutting one another for the work and in the end its the driver that's paying for it.

ProsSeeing the place in my rear view mirror driving home

ConsMonthly pay. weekend working

Make it what you will

Tip..If you just take what they give you and go, feel free to call in with issues, access to jobs etc, parking, unloading issues, remember at the end of the day its your license so stay legal and stick to xpo rules and they cant say anything. This place can and is a nightmare if you let it be, but if you can just shrug things off and get on with your day and the minimum of a 10 hour shift its fine. The kit is good, not great but good. Most people get on driver wise but the office staff and managers are in the main, thick as f**k as none of them have driven hgv. With the exception of a couple who can then understand situations if your honest about them. Easy enough job, fast paced, can be stressful for some. Its a good place to start as if you move on any other job will be easier in my opinion. Paid by the hour so...... do as long as you need.

ProsErrrr..... its a job and the money isn't the worst out there

ConsArrogant office, slow loading, heavy runs, pecking order, one rule for some. Vending machines rubbish

Depot in liquidation

TS deliveries days and nights A typical day is to get up between 3 and 6am. Walk into the truck stop and do the morning rituals. Get some coffee, walk around and inspect the truck and trailer and then check messages, do the logs; perhaps check weather and any safety conditions on the Qualcomm regarding route of travel and get rolling. Drive to a shipper or receiver and either "drop and hook" or "live load" or "live unload". If it is live then you may be sitting for hours and not making any money as I get paid by the miles I drive. If time is on my hands, then I will use this down time to plan the trip route. Planning fuel stops and dealing with weigh stations and weather and road construction are also daily events to deal with. A really "good" day on the job for me 15 hour and lots of miles, "drop and hooks" instead of live loading and unloading, and being able to get to the truck stop early to find a spot and have a nice clean hot shower followed by a good meal.

ConsLong hours
