Will there be Demon Slayer Season 3?

Considering the popularity, Demon Slayer Season 3 looks inevitable. It’s just a matter of time, the studio announces it and starts with the production. We are expecting it to premiere by the end of this year.

Wait, that doesn't add up. If the Entertainment District arc is 11 episodes starting on December 5th, and the episodes air every Sunday, that would mean it would end February 13th, not January 30th.

I think the Entertainment District arc is supposed to start with a 1-hour episode. So is that actually multiple episodes just airing on the same day?

Editor's Note: The following review contains spoilers.

The immensely popular anime “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,” based on the manga of the same name, has just completed its second season consisting of seven episodes covering the Mugen Train Arc, and 11 episodes adapting the Entertainment District Arc. Since its first episode aired in April 2019, “Demon Slayer” has rapidly become one of the most popular mainstream anime, both in Japan and the United States.

The show has also become one of the most commercially successful anime of all time, with its debut feature film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train” becoming both the highest-grossing film of 2020, and the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. While Season 2’s final episode may have been slightly underwhelming, “Demon Slayer’s” newest season remains an incredibly enjoyable follow-up to its hit debut.

The anime follows Tanjiro Kamado, a teenager striving to become a “Demon Slayer” after his family was slaughtered, and his younger sister, Nezuko, was turned into a demon. Along the way, Tanjiro learns more about demons and joins the Demon Slayer Corps in the hopes of finding a way to turn his sister back into a human. On his journey, Tanjiro befriends fellow Demon Slayers Inosuke and Zenitsu, among many others.

Known for its lovable characters, iconic fight scenes and outstanding animation, “Demon Slayer’s” success is comparable to popular shows such as “Naruto” and “Dragon Ball Z” and has taken the mantle as the newest big-name series in mainstream Shounen anime.

Following the events of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train,” the season follows Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke, as they are mentored by Hashira Tengen Uzui, a master Demon Slayer. The party travels to Yoshiwara Red-Light District to hunt down a demon which has been terrorizing the town.

The first few episodes primarily deal with exposition and follow the group as they try to infiltrate the town to locate the demons. Once the demons are eventually located, the show’s intensity picks up drastically. The demons are revealed to be a brother and sister pair named Daki and Gyutaro – two antagonists with tremendous strength. The ensuing battle between our protagonists and the demons takes up the majority of the second half of season two and features wonderfully choreographed fight scenes, stellar animation and incredibly emotional turning points as Tanjiro and company struggle to keep up with the demons' sheer power.

In Episode 10, the season reaches its climax as the group finally manages to defeat the demons with an epic team attack that slices both of the demons’ heads off simultaneously. After the grand battle, the town has been almost completely destroyed, and the Demon Slayers have been pushed to their absolute brink.

In an unexpected turn of events, with their final breath, Daki and Gyutaro unleash one final attack that engulfs Tanjiro and the rest of the Demon Slayers. This plot point left fans with a massive cliffhanger going into the series finale titled: "No Matter How Many Lives,” which eventually released on Feb. 13.

While the series finale is not bad or even unenjoyable per se, it did leave fans disappointed as it was not what many had expected. Before the episode’s release, it was announced that the final episode would have an extended runtime of 45 minutes. This reveal led fans to believe that it would be an action-packed and grandiose conclusion that would end the series on a bang; Episode 11 is not that by any stretch of the imagination.

As opposed to an epic showdown, the episode mainly serves to tie up the loose ends left directly following the events of the previous battle, and establish plot points for the following season. It is swiftly confirmed that Tanjiro and the others all made it out alive. However, Tengen has been heavily damaged and decides to retire as a Hashira and leave the front lines of the fight against the demons. The episode also contains a flashback and the tragic backstory of the brother and sister demon pair.

Also, Tengen is approached by the Snake Hashira: Ibanai Oburo. Oburo and Tengen discuss the future of the Demon Slayers, and Tengen asserts that Tanjiro is a youngster who will soon be able to take his place as an upper-rank fighter.

While all of this is extremely exciting for fans who want to see how Tanjiro’s journey is going to progress in the future, it did leave a sour taste in the mouth of many who were misled into thinking that the series would end with an epic finale. That being said, “Demon Slayer's” second season was still a massive success, leaving fans as desperate as ever to see what other dangers are in store for Tanjro and company as they continue on their demon-slaying adventures in season three.
