How do you apply military discount to home depot online

Like 1,000’s of other brands in the U.S., Home Depot offers a military discount to both active duty and retired military.

Unfortunately, they don’t do a very good job of explaining the exact terms and conditions of the military discount anywhere on their website.

I spoke with a representative from Home Depot, and the following is a summary of our conversation.

While the Home Depot military discount is generous, there’s two major problems…

1. It’s only available in stores, and

2. There are a ton of restricted items

Update December 2021 – OMK recently learned that Home Depot has finally changed up their military discount policy.

The discount is available everyday, and can also be redeemed with online purchases.

What is the official Home Depot Policy for Military Discounts? (Updated Jan. 2022)

The official Home Depot Military discount offers all active-duty military personnel, as well as veterans and spouses, a 10% discount.

You can redeem the military discount 365 days out of the year, and it is no longer restricted to specific holidays like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

Who is eligible for the Home Depot military discount?

The discount can be redeemed by active duty members and veterans of all branches of the military, including:

  • Navy
  • Army
  • Marine Corps
  • Air Force

  • National Guard
  • US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS)

Retired or disabled veterans are also eligible, as well as their spouses.

Keep in mind that the 10% discount stops once you’ve received $400 in discounts in a calendar year.

Once you hit $400 in discounts, you will not receive any future discounts until it resets in the next calendar year.

How do I claim my discount online?

Can I claim the discount on behalf of a family member?

We’ve had a few people ask us if it’s possible for them to claim the military discount on behalf of someone else that’s served in the military.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem possible.

We actually had someone leave a comment about this recently, check it out below:

“I’m helping my dad renovate his home. He is 75 years old. They told me the veteran has to be present with his or her military ID.

He uses a walker and it’s hard enough for him to come and go to scheduled appointments, much less a trip to Home Depot.

I have his military DD214 page and share the same last name as him.

Doesn’t matter, they will not honor the discount unless he is present.”

 – Laura K.

So unless the veteran is present, you will not be able to redeem the military discount.

We will update this page if that policy ever changes.

Can I use my DD214 as proof of military service?

According to Home Depot, the only way to use your military discount is to first enroll online by creating an account and having your military service verified.

Can I verify my military service in stores instead of doing it online?

Although I couldn’t find any specific info on this, if you go to your local Home Depot and visit the customer service desk, they will probably be able to help you sign up for an online account.

Just be sure to bring supporting documentation (military ID, DD214, etc.) as a backup.

Do I have to bring my military ID every time I go to make a purchase?

Not anymore. In the past, you had to provide some sort of proof that you served or are actively serving.

With that said, the new military discount is now done online, and you’re only required to verify your service one time.

Can I receive a military discount if I’ve been anything other than honorably discharged?

According to Home Depot’s official site, only dishonorably discharged veterans are not eligible for the military discount.

I’m a veteran, but the person at Home Depot just told me that they don’t give away military discounts anymore.  What gives?!

You’re not the first one, unfortunately.

We’ve read a wide array of complaints from several veterans who said they tried claiming their 10% discount but were denied for one reason or another.

Here’s just a snapshot of a few of those complaints:

It seems like it really depends on the local Home Depot you’re dealing with, and whether or not they’re going to be strict about any particular rules.

Additionally, I have read from several other sources that you actually need to register with the customer service desk AND get approved to receive your military discount.

Many vets have sworn off Home Depot, and have decided to use Lowes for the purchases instead.

They certainly don’t make it easy!  With that said…

How else does Home Depot help military veterans?

Despite the issues with their military discount program, Home Depot does A LOT for veterans.

Their Home Depot foundation has been helping veterans since 2011, both in the form of donations, and employment.

As I mentioned earlier, they currently employ over 35,000 veterans across the U.S. and have granted millions of dollars to nonprofit organizations that directly help veterans.

Specifically, they put an emphasis on ending veteran homelessness, donating money and resources to building homes for military veterans.

You can learn more about the program here.

What does Service-Connected mean?

From the official VA website:

Disability compensation is a monetary benefit paid to Veterans who are determined by VA to be disabled by an injury or illness that was incurred or aggravated during active military service. These disabilities are considered to be service connected.
