I had a few guests over at my place recently, and they wanted to show me a few photos and videos from a trip they’d gone on.

They noticed my TV and wanted to try using AirPlay.

I had a rather long and secure password for my Wi-Fi network that I wasn’t very comfortable sharing.

So I hopped online for a quick bit of research and learned how to use AirPlay to mirror a screen without Wi-Fi.

To AirPlay without Wi-Fi, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and select your AirPlay 2 Compatible TV from the AirPlay Status Menu in the top right corner of your Mac.

For your iOS device, select it from the AirPlay button in the Control Center. Input the code if asked.

How to AirPlay to Apple TV

Peer-to-peer AirPlay links your iPad or iPhone to your TV without having to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Your iOS device will turn into a transient Wi-Fi hotspot, and your TV will tether to it and AirPlay your videos, images, and songs.

Ensure that your iOS device and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.

How to Mirror your iPhone Screen using AirPlay

You can use Peer-to-Peer AirPlay without directly connecting to Wi-Fi.

 Your AirPlay 2 Compatible TV and iPhone use Bluetooth for the initial connection.

Next, Wi-Fi is used to perform the screen mirroring.

Follow these steps to Mirror your iPhone Screen to your TV using AirPlay:

1. Launch Control Center, and swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
2. Tap Screen Mirroring

3. Select your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible TV from the list of available devices.
4. If you get a passcode on your TV, input it into your iOS device.

To stop mirroring your iOS or iPadOS device, relaunch Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and tap Stop Mirroring.

Neither device can be connected to another Wi-Fi signal that has Internet service.

Therefore, if you want to stream content from your iPhone device and watch it on TV, it must be downloaded and stored on the iPhone’s local storage.

How to Mirror your MacBook Screen using AirPlay

If you are using a Mac, you don’t need to ensure that you’re not connected to a wireless network with Internet Access, since the computer has both Wi-Fi and a Wired connection.

The wired connection will be used for Internet access, while the wireless connection will be used for the AirPlay connection.

Click on the AirPlay button in the menu bar, in the top-right corner of the screen, and select your TV from the list of available devices.

So you don’t need a Wi-Fi Router or an Internet Connection, but both your devices should have working Wi-Fi Radios.

Does AirPlay Use Data

AirPlay can use Data if:

• you stream shows from streaming services on your iOS devices to your TV while both are on the same Wi-Fi Network.
• you stream videos to your TV from your iOS device, while your TV is connected to your iOS device’s Personal Hotspot while Mobile Data is active.

AirPlay won’t use Data if:

• you use peer-to-peer AirPlay to stream video that’s in your iOS device’s local storage to your TV
• you use Screen Mirroring to mirror your iOS device’s screen to your TV while neither are connected to a Wi-Fi Network.

What You Need for Peer-to-Peer AirPlay

Peer-to-Peer AirPlay does not function well with every TV and iOS device.

If you’re on Apple TV, you’ll need the latest version of Apple TV 3 rev. A.

This model will have the code A1469 on the bottom.

Just tilt and inspect the bottom of your Apple TV if you aren’t aware of your model number.

You can also lookup your Apple TV model number by heading to Settings > General > About.

Your Apple TV 3 should also be running tvOS version 7.0 (or later) installed. This functionality is supported by all Apple TV 4 models.

You will also require an iOS device running a more recent version of iOS than iOS 8 or the 2012 Mac running OS X 10.10.

Setting Up Peer-to-Peer AirPlay Without Wi-Fi

1. Click on “Forget This Network” on your iOS device or Mac and TV.
2. Ensure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are switched ON for both iOS devices or Mac and TV and restart both devices.
3. AirPlay functionality is now expected to work on the iOS device or Mac.

To connect your device to the TV:

1. On your Mac, pick your TV from the AirPlay status menu in the top right corner menu bar.
2. On iOS devices, use the Control Center to link to AirPlay. Check for the AirPlay button.
3.  If requested, enter the 4-digit code on your iOS device. You can see a 4-digit passcode on your TV. If it’s your first time using peer-to-peer, it could take a few minutes.

Troubleshooting AirPlay on Apple TV

 If you have trouble connecting your Apple TV, follow these directions

1. Turn ON Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your iOS system.
2. Turn ON Bluetooth on your Apple TV.
3. Restart your Apple TV. You will see the LED light glow. If the Apple TV light starts blinking instead, you might need to factory reset your Apple TV.
4. Select the control panel from your iOS system and pick Apple TV mirroring.
5. The ‘Require Device Verification’ setting (Settings > AirPlay) will need to be turned ON for your Apple TV.

If it couldn’t connect, you can try the following: 

1. Update all of your Apple TV and iOS devices to the latest operating systems.
2. Then restart your iOS device and Apple TV while keeping Bluetooth and Wi-Fi ON.
3. Activate AirPlay in your Apple TV, and then enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in your iPad or iOS device.
4. Keeping your Wi-Fi ON, disable your Wi-Fi network in your device
5. You need to “forget” the home network from your iPad.

If you are signing in to the same iCloud account on both systems, there won’t be any security to prevent unidentified people from connecting to your TV.

If you are not signed in to the same iCloud account, you will have to enter a 4-digit PIN that Apple TV creates.

Moreover, AirPlay has the potential to play over a much greater distance between devices than Bluetooth.

Even when the internet connection is down, you can still use AirPlay to stream music, images and watch videos.

This means that anyone can easily show you their photographs, videos, and even stream music – all without signing in to your Wi-Fi network. 

Peer to Peer AirPlay operates by using Bluetooth for requests and exploration and then provides a point-to-point Wi-Fi link for data transfer without using any network.

Using peer-to-peer AirPlay, it’s easy to link your iOS device to your TV.

Easily give a presentation at your workplace or on a customer visit by wirelessly connecting your iOS device to your TV.

You can also throw up a film for the children on a road trip by linking your TV and iOS device to your car’s screen.

There are, still, certain drawbacks. Peer-to-peer AirPlay does not work for YouTube streams, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, Showtime.

Everything else will operate just fine even if you do not have an internet connection

But the best part is that Peer-to-Peer functions with any material that is already saved on your Mac or iOS device, such as downloaded files, photographs, presentations, or songs.

So download and transfer material before entering Peer-to-Peer AirPlay for a smooth viewing experience.
