You need to register on the General Register Office (GRO) website to get a copy of a birth, adoption, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate in England and Wales.

You can use this service to research your family tree.

There’s a different process for getting certificates in Scotland and getting certificates in Northern Ireland.

Certificate fees

Certificates cost £11 and are sent 4 days after you apply.

If you do not have a GRO index reference number, you’ll have to pay £3 extra for each search. Certificates are sent 15 working days after you apply.

If you need the certificate sooner, you can use the priority service for £35. It’ll be sent the next working day if you order by 4pm.

Extra copies are the same price.

Registration of births or deaths abroad

If you’ve registered a birth or death with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Overseas Registration Unit, you cannot get a copy from the GRO until the November of the following year.

If you need a copy sooner, email the name of the registered person, the registration date and reference number to:

You’ll get a reply telling you how to get your copy and the cost - usually £50 plus courier fees.

For Indian Nationals

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A Letter of Birth Certificate is issued based on the Indian passport only and applicants must come in person.
  2. Birth Certificate application Form should be filled and signed by the applicant. For minor below 15 years, parents can sign.
  3. Original Indian Passport and copies of the same is required.
  4. Original and Copy of IC (PR/ EP/WP/ S PASS/DP) is required.
  5. The physical presence of the applicant is required for the age of 5 and above.
  6. Processing time is 3 to 5 working days. Fee applicable is S$30 in cash only.

For Indian Origin Foreign Nationals

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A Letter of Birth Certificate is issued based on the Cancelled Indian passport and applicants must come in person with the following documents: -
  2. Cancelled Indian Passports (Physically)-preferably all Indian passports held and copies of the same is required.
  3. Applicant has to provide the date of Renunciation/Surrender of Indian passport by attaching a copy(Renunciation/Surrender Certificate) thereoff.
  4. Original and a copy of OCI card.
  5. Current foreign passport and a copy thereof.
  6. Resident/Valid permit in Singapore with Original and a copy thereof.
  7. Processing time is 3 to 5 working days. Fee applicable is S$30 in cash only.

NOTE: For Emergency Services, apply directly at the High Commission of India with an additional emergency fee of S$100 in cashProcessing time is 2 working days.

Application made in person by the owner or by his/her representatives will be received at different Census Serbilis Centers.
Documents applied at the East Avenue Census Serbilis Outlet will be released on the same outlet on the date specified in the receipt.

Information to be provided for the issuance of Birth Certificate:

  1.     Complete name of the child (first, middle, last)
  2.     Complete name of the father
  3.     Complete maiden name of the mother
  4.     Date of birth (month, day, year)
  5.     Place of birth (city/municipality, province)
  6.     Whether or not registered late. (If registered late, please state the year when it was registered.
  7.     Complete name and address of the requesting party
  8.     Relationship to the child
  9.     Number of copies needed
  10.     Purpose of the certification

NOTE: ISSUANCE OF CERTIFICATION OF BIRTH IS SUBJECT TO THE CONFIDENTIALITY CLAUSE OF ARTICLE 7 OF THE CHILD AND YOUTH WELFARE CODE WHICH PROVIDES:

Art. 7. Nondisclosure of birth records. The records of a person's birth shall be kept strictly confidential and no information relating thereto shall be issued except on the request of any of the following:
 

  1. The person himself, or any person authorized by him;
  2. His spouse, his parent or parents, his direct descendants, or the guardian or institution legally incharge of him, if he is a minor;
  3. The court or proper public official whenever absolutely necessary in administrative, judicial or other official proceedings to determine the identity of the child's parents or other circumstances surrounding his birth; and
  4. In case of the person's death, the nearest of kin.

Any person violating the prohibition shall suffer the penalty of imprisonment of at least two months or a fine in an amount not exceeding five hundred pesos, or both, in the discretion of the court.

How can I obtain a copy of my birth certificate?

You can apply for a birth extract online using the e-Service. Only the following persons are eligible to apply for a birth extract: The birth certificate holder (aged 21 years and above) Parent of the birth certificate holder.
