FAQsWhat is the ESC's Background Check Process? All employees working in an educational setting in the State of Ohio are required to submit to a periodic background check prior to employment. Background checks for classroom substitutes and educational aide permits must also be submitted electronically to the Ohio Department of Education at the time you are complete your background check for the Ohio Department of Education to process your license. Applicants who already have their background results on file with the Ohio Department of Education within the past 12 months and can provide a copy of those results to our office, may not need to be fingerprinted for employment at this time. Any individual who has completed a BCI check in the past 12 months but does not have a paper copy of their results may submit a Request for Copy of Background Check form to the Ohio Bureau of Investigation. Please note until this document has been received, which can take up to 30 days and delay your employment. What is the cost for a background check? The current cost for the BCI background check is $30; the cost of the FBI background check is $28. The Ohio Attorney General’s office has advised that the background check information may only be released to the individual/organization authorized on the BCI waiver for release of criminal history information. It is not permissible for the ESC-COG to copy and distribute the results of a criminal history background check to multiple organizations. How do I pay for my background check? Can I take my own fingerprints for FBI background check?Individuals may NOT fingerprint themselves; fingerprints must be taken by a law enforcement agent or other authorized contractor. We will accept electronically produced ink cards from any authorized fingerprint provider such as a local law enforcement agency or licensed fingerprint contractor.

If you were fingerprinted at the Office of Human Resources after October 1, 2021, BCI/FBI results can be obtained as early as 1-3 business days. Fingerprints that were completed at an outside agency may take up to 30-90 days to receive results.
