I have a 2019 RT Scat Pack which I bought in July.
Recently I started getting calls from the dealer where I bought it asking me if I wanted to schedule my first service. I found this odd for them to be doing this so soon.
So just out of curiosity, I asked what they charge for the oil change and the lady said $230 and change. I almost fell off my chair when I heard this.
So I am wondering if the price they quoted is fair considering this is a high performance car. Or are they trying to RIP people off??
I am in the silicon valley area by the way.

I paid a little over $100 for oil changes at my stealership. 2010 SRT, 7.5 quarts of synthetic. Also included a "multi point inspection" what ever that is....

So yeah, I think that is high. Ask for a breakdown of exactly what is included for the $230.

For $230.00 they better be changing the transmission and differential fluids, along with the engine oil and filter!!!!

I purchase full synthetic engine oil at places like Advanced Auto (and keep several MOPAR SRT oil filters in my garage). Take my supplies to the dealership and they charge me $14.00 and that includes their multi point inspection.

That's interesting. I highly doubt the dealership near me will do that. Actually I'm surprised that any dealer would do that.
They're not making any money this way.

My dealership offered me 3 free oil changes when I bought my car. I would expect the average to be around $100 so $230 is way high I believe.

Even when I had my Jeep Wrangler the oil changes were about $60. This is with full synthetic. And
of course the filter. If you do it yourself I'd think it would be about 1/2 of that.

That's where they look over the car for extra work to pad the bill.

Out in the tri valley area -- Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, or out in Tracy, I have paid from just under $100 to around $125 for oil/filter services for my Hellcat. The just under was courtesy of a coupon that I qualified for. All services have included a pretty good discount from list for the oil: List is around $10/quart and I'm charged around $6/quart; and I got a discount on the filter, too.

Oh, I just remembered, the last oil change I had done in Tracy -- this several oil changes ago I think the 10K mile oil change -- the service was free.

The cost of living is very high in the Silicon Valley, as I'm sure you are aware of. (It was high when I lived down there up until 2000.)

As a result businesses have to pay more for everything. So they charge more. Some call it the "tax" for the nice CA weather.

Also, what is probably going on and it will spread to other outlying dealerships is dealers are getting away from the "quickie lube" business. I first encountered this with my Porsche cars. I do not recall the service costs from 2002 to 2006 but starting back in around 2006 when Livermore got a Porsche dealership just a mile from me the oil/filter services were in around $150. (Each engine took 9 quarts of every expensive oil, a filter of course, new sealing rings for the drain plug (or plugs) and o-rings for the filter housing.) I supplied the oil because at the time I could buy the same oil from the local Napa auto parts store for less than the dealer charged for the oil. After a while the dealer price for the oil became competitive and I just let the dealer supply the oil.

Even so the price started going up.

At the end of 2017 when I sold both cars oil changes were running nearly $400. While the price of oil had dropped some the service department was tacking on time to preform an inspection of the car, checking/topping up all fluids -- even the windshield washer fluid. In some ways the inspection and fluid checking/topping up was appreciated. More than once a tech spotted something in the tire, or a leak. In one case when I had a car in for an early transmission fluid service the tech spotted a transmission leak which resulted in the car getting a new transmission under warranty. In another case the tech spotted failing CV boots and I had these done which prevented damage to very expensive half shafts and their CV bearings. Another time a leaking rear main seal was spotted, leaking spark plug tubes, and leaking front diff axle flange seals. Many times I was able to participate in the inspection of one of my cars which was nice. I was kept informed about tire wear and brake rotor wear.

But it got to be expensive. Right now Hellcat servicing is not burdensome. While I hope it remains relatively low I expect even out here it will go up.

Just to put the cost in perspective, it just cost me $95 for 7 quarts do Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and a new SRT filter (package deal on eBay). The specified oil is getting really expensive! My local shop allows me to use his lift to service my SP but I have an hour or two of my time invested (travel, cool down time, 15 minutes of actual work, 44 minutes of BSing with the guys haha) which is worth a few bucks. So IMO if your dealer was actually using the specified oil and they have time to do a multi point inspection and paperwork and what not, paying around $150 to me would make sense. $230 seems a bit excessive.

When I changed the oil I always did the change with the oil hot. I never let the engine cool down any before changing the oil.

As for the $150 vs. $230 it depends upon the labor rate. Don't know what the labor rate is at the Dodge dealers in the area but back in late 2017 it was $160/hour at the local Porsche dealer. Yeah, the techs don't get all that.

But I note while you get to use a service bay at the local shop you didn't have to pay to have that installed and keep it in good working order, or pay the insurance or the lease on the building, and so on. So your low cost oil change is being subsidized by someone else paying your share of the cost of the equipment you use. And while you are using the bay the bay is tied up so a paying customer's car can't be serviced.

Not all of us have a shop so willing to make available its expensive lift and service bay and service bay time so we can save money on a DIY oil change.

That was kind of my point... $150+ doesn’t seem all that out of line given that it costs about $100 to do it yourself.

I also did the same. Took the oil and filter to a popular oil change location and did the oil change and checked all levels = $20. Next time I'll probably stuff my big gut under there and do it myself...

I would check your dealer or get a MOPAr Service contract. Typically get 3 or 4 oil changes for what you folks are paying for one. Just make sure you are getting the 7 quarts and the prescious SRT filter.
