Can i get an oil change with expired tags

In all states in the United States, it is illegal to drive with expired car registration tags. In some states, you can receive a fine for expired registration tags even if you are not currently driving the car.

It is your responsibility to pay your tags on time to avoid being pulled over and paying a fine. But, if you fail to do so, here's a bit of what you can expect.

Can I Get Pulled Over for Expired or Missing Tags?

Yes, you can get pulled over for expired, missing, or non-visible registration tags on your car or motorcycle. This is considered a non-moving violation and can carry fines.

If a police offer notices you driving with expired or missing license plate tags, they will pull you over and give you a fine. But they can also fine you even if you are not driving if they noticed your expired tags in a parking lot or on the street, for example.

Remember that your registration tags go on your license plate. Do not leave them in your glove compartment or your wallet, or you risk getting pulled over and getting a fine. It's a good idea to leave yourself a note in your calendar to check your car registration every year, especially if your state does not provide automated renewal through its moto vehicle department.

What Happens if I Get Pulled Over for Expired or Missing Tags?

If you get pulled over for expired or missing tags, the most likely consequence is receiving a fine. The fine amount depends on where you live. You may or may not have to go to court to receive your fine.

Some states may require you to show up in court to pay the fine. At this court appearance, you should come with proof that you have corrected the issue, namely, paid for the renewal tags on your license plate. If you do not appear in court, there may be further fines and fees applied to your record.

If you continue to drive without proper license plate tags despite fines and other warnings, you may be arrested and do some time in jail.

What if My Car Gets Impounded for Expired or Missing Tags?

If your tags are expired by six months or more, your car may get impounded. The cost of impound will be added to the fine and the late renewal fee, significantly increasing what you have to pay to drive legally again. The process to get your car out of impound differs from state to state and even city to city.

Impounded cars are often not available for release until:

  • All fines are paid relating to impound

  • The reason for ticketing or impoundment is corrected

  • DMV records are clear

What Is the Process for Renewing My License Plate Tags?

The process for renewing your license plate tags varies state by state. Some states send you documentation for renewing your tags by mail or by visiting your local licensing office. Some states may have automated systems where you can register for an automatic withdrawal every year out of your bank account. What you usually need are your title number, your plate number, and a credit card.

I took my car for an oil change last month and SpeeDee didn't notice it either!

Can i get an oil change with expired tags

You know what? I'm done with SpeeDee. They've been doing my inspections for the past 5 years, but I'm moving on now. I've been way too forgiving for their crap lately. The last 3 or 4 times I've gone there I've been treated with the same apathetic attitude and hardly given any future-proofing service (they always checked my car for problems, but not anymore). I wait my usual hour and half for service (it's always packed)... I honestly don't mind the waiting, it's how they don't do their job that bothers me.

Last oil change I did with them they said they topped off fluids and vacuumed my car... lol, yeah right. My car had as much sand inside getting out there than when I drove in (snow storms = lots of sand and salt around). Who knows if they topped fluids or not. Every time I turn my car on it gives me the light of "Change Oil Soon!" What?! I have like 2500 miles left before my next oil change! Did they not do it right or something? And now I'm noticing every time I brake my car is putting off an unusual squeaking sound. WTF! The problems just keep adding up. >_<

Normally Saturn does all my fixings and oil changes for me, but they've been out of business for the past year or so (in my area). So it's either SpeeDee or JiffyLube. I'm going tomorrow to JiffyLube for a Transmission Flush and an inspection... God knows what else they're going to find that SpeeDee neglected.

GODDAMN IT!! I hardly have enough money to pay my bills, I honestly can't afford any sort of auto repairs right now. They're never cheap either, it's usually a multiple of $200.

**** SPEEDEE!! Nothing but noobs there. >=(

-Edit-
Alright, just returned from Jiffy Lube. Spent a total of $219 there for an oil change (decided to do it prematurely... no more "change oil" light!), Transmission Flush, and Coolant Flush. From now on, because my car is over 50k miles, I have to use a more expensive oil for optimization and longevity. Great service, though. The kid (he really was one!) explained everything very well, plus I had a "**** it" attitude and just said yes to everything.

I should've upgraded the wipers too, meh, maybe next time.

Also did my inspection sticker for $29. Grand total of almost $250... good-bye Audio Technica A700 headphones and Astro A40 Mix Amp.

well, i don't know what a car inspection sticker is, is that like the Smog Certificate we need to get in California before registering a car?

But Jiffy Lube is a complete rip off, they charge like $40 for the same oil change that Econo Lube does for $20. Though both places will always try to tell you there's tons of stuff wrong with your car and quote you prices that cost hundreds of dollars to fix. Don't you have a mechanic you're friendly with? I always take the paper they give me after getting an oil change and have my mechanic look over it, usually its nothing more than getting a new $10 filter or usually its just nothing and they just want to scam more money out of you.

Nah, I usually took my car to the Saturn dealer if it ever needed repairs (it was cheaper overall). They had new people there all the time, so I was never well acquainted with them. I usually like to do preventive maintenance, though. A Transmission flush every 10,000 miles doesn't seem that bad to me. Next time I stop by and I'm going to ask about flushing out the gunk from the gas valves and stuff. Keep the car burning clean fuel.

And yeah, it's the emissions sticker of approval needed before renewing a car. It's a yearly thing, I just never noticed mine was expired until recently.

Summer of '08 I got pulled literally feet from my house for an expired sticker. My mom was out of town, and my dad was at work, so I HAD to take the old tank to work that morning. I'd been driving my mom's car all summer due to the AC in the tank being broken. Needless to say I was pissed. Almost chucked my phone out through the window when I got home and called my mom. Missed a day of school to go to court about it, told the judge I'd been in Japan, and when I got back I took my mom's car everywhere. Since I was the last person that day, she decided to ask me about my life. She said, and I do quote, "I like traffic court because I get to meet kids with futures". Turns out she knew my guidance counselor back at my high school. Needless to say, I always look at the inspection sticker dates on any car I get into now.

Do your states not send you a "send us our money to get a sticker" and/or "go get your emissions tested" reminders?

hey daniel, if you liked the service you were recieving at Saturn, try going to a chevrolet dealership as both saturn and chevy are part of the same company General Motors. almost all of the mechanical parts on your saturn are the same parts that are in some chevys so it's not like they won't have the parts. My dad takes his Buick(also a GM brand) to a chevy dealership for all that stuff so i know it's not uncommon.

Just so you know Dan. When you see that little oil light come on your lucky you didn't blow the thing up. It's a lot easier to blow the engine up then you think. It's always best to get oil changes, and stuff before its actually due for one.

beach: I guess I lucked out. No ticket. Not that I know of, anyways.

CK: Nope.

Sagara: Thanks for the tip! I'll keep it mind next time my car is due for repairs.

Blue: The thing is, though, that little light came up right after I had my oil changed. Like I just got in my car and the light was turning on when I turned on my car... I chalked it up as a non-issue since it disappeared after a few minutes. But it kept getting turned on every time I started my car. I wasn't due until another 2,500 miles or March 30. Luckily the oil change at Jiffy Lube fixed the issue, though.

Oh yeah! That's another thing about my tank. It always says "service engine soon". Our merchanic said it was nothing to worry about, they couldn't get it to stop lighting up after they disabled some annoying security button underneath the steering wheel. Stupid Ford.

yeah, does this not happen in other states? I think mine is due in May, but I got the renewal in the mail in January and already have it taken care of for the year. (Though my license expires in April and didn't get that renewal until last week, and for this one I have to go down there and take an eye test).

well, dealerships tend to rip you off if its just basic mechanic work. Its probably a lot cheaper if you get friendly with a local mechanic, and then they probably won't even bother to charge you for quick and easy things. I don't know how many times over the years I've had something really simple that just required a quick 5 minute fix and I was on my way.

Though there are things that only the dealer can do, and they tend to rip you off. I had the battery thing fall apart on my car's keyless entry and had to get another one, ended up costing like $175 for the tiny little thing and for them to program it. Even if you can find one cheaper on the internet and just have them program it for you they charge you even more for not buying it directly from them.

well on an older car that's definitely true. But pretty much all the new cars now have the fancy computer systems with all kinds of warning lights for stuff that come on way before there's a problem. Of course you should always get something checked out right away, but just because a light comes on doesn't mean the car is about to blow up (when that happens there is no warning, like what happened to my Chevy Citation while I was driving it).

Oh yeah! That's another thing about my tank. It always says "service engine soon". Our merchanic said it was nothing to worry about, they couldn't get it to stop lighting up after they disabled some annoying security button underneath the steering wheel. Stupid Ford.

yeah, it really sucks when that happens. My mom had a Dodge Colt that had to have the engine replaced, and doing that tripped some sensor that they could not figure out how to get it reset, their manuals on the car had no documentation of it at all, even though there was physically nothing wrong with the car the stupid dashboard light stayed on. Unfortunately in California even if there is nothing wrong with the car it still won't pass smog certification just because the light is on and since they couldn't figure out how to reset the switch they had to just end up cutting the wire or taking out the light behind it or something, just so it wouldn't appear to be on and they could pass it through smog.

How long can you ride around with expired tags?

In some cases, you may just get a warning or a small fine. But after six months in all states, your car may be impounded. The cost to get your car back after this is often more than the cost of registration. So, at the very worst, you should try to renew your tags within that time frame.

How long can you drive with expired tags in Arizona?

If your tags are expired by six months or more, your car may get impounded. The cost of impound will be added to the fine and the late renewal fee, significantly increasing what you have to pay to drive legally again.
