Question: About 4 hours after submitting my renewal application by mail (today), my school informed me that they may want to send me abroad about a week earlier than originally planned (Sept. 15th, rather than Sept. 22nd). The 22nd is 8 weeks away. The 15th is seven. Given that applications generally take 4-6 weeks, 7 weeks cut things a bit closer than I am comfortable with.

If I do need to leave on the earlier date, what is (or are) my best option(s) for expediting my application, assuming there are any? I am currently working in Washington DC, but will be back in San Francisco on Aug. 20th.

Also, do you think I need to even worry about expediting the application?

Answer: You can call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to try and change your request from routine to expedited processing. If you can pay the expedited passport fee with a credit card, you will likely be able to make the switch.

Having said that, it is very likely that your passport will arrive in plenty of time and you will be spared the added expense. I recommend you keep tabs on the status of your passport and, if it does not arrive a couple of weeks before your trip, go to the regional passport agency in San Francisco. You can get a same-day passport there if you need it.

Click the link below to check the status of your passport application. Note, the status usually does not appear until 5-7 days after you submit the application.

The Singapore passport is valid for 10 years for citizens aged 16 and above.  For citizens below the age of 16, the passport validity is 5 years.  For the 5-year passports, any remaining validity from the previous passport, up to a maximum of 9 months, may be carried over to the renewed passport.   You may apply or renew your passport via ICA’s eService using your SingPass if your current passport is expiring in about 6 months or contain no space / pages for visas.  Alternatively, you may apply or renew your passport at the Consulate-General.

Documents Required

  2. Any other documentary proof of Singapore citizenship (i.e. copy of identity card / Birth Certificate / Citizenship Certificate)

  4. Application for Singapore Biometric Passport Submitted Overseas (applicable if submitting application in person at the Consulate)

Note: If you are applying for a replacement for a lost passport, you should immediately report the loss to ICA at https://go.gov.sg/reportlossppt.  A police report is required if your passport was lost due to crime.

Processing Time

For applicants residing overseas, the processing time for passport application will take 4 to 6 weeks. Upon successful processing of the application, ICA will send the passport to the Consulate-Generalwho will notify Singaporeans via email or phone when their passport is ready for collection at the Consulate-General.  Applicants will need to produce the required documents at the time of passport collection if they had submitted their application online.  For identification and security reasons, applicants are required to turn up in person at the Consulate-General at least once, either during passport application or collection.

Passport Fee
