Blue bell chocolate covered strawberry ice cream

Blue Bell Ice Cream has brought their Red, White & Blue Bell back to stores as of yesterday (June 15th)!

This delicious and popular flavor features strawberry ice cream loaded with strawberries, a creamy vanilla ice cream and a smooth blueberry ice cream combined with sweetened blueberries packaged side by side in one carton.

As you may have noticed lately, Blue Bell is both introducing new flavors and bringing back some of their most popular flavors! Yeah!!

Blue Bell Sherbet is back. Their Lime Sherbet and Orange Sherbet both returned to stores on May 22nd and they will have even more flavors coming your way.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is also now available again as of May 15th.

Blue Bell is also introducing new flavors such as Bride's Cake Ice Cream...a luscious almond ice cream with white cake pieces surrounded by a rich amaretto cream cheese icing swirl.

With this new flavor, Blue Bell is bringing back Groom’s Cake - a chocolate ice cream with chocolate cake pieces and chocolate-coated strawberry hearts, surrounded by swirls of strawberry sauce and chocolate icing.

Bride’s Cake and Groom's Cake will both be available for a limited time.

But again the one just introduced is Red, White and Blue, so get patriotic and have some!

This… is kind of a mess. While it’s certainly a good dessert, I find the overall texture seems to detract heavily from it as a whole. This is disappointing considering it was the first flavor we’ve found since starting the reviews that is neither rotational nor year-round; we speculate that this is a flavor stores can order specially but it won’t show up otherwise. In other words this is one of several rare and hard to get flavors!

Enough about the logistics though, how does it taste? It tastes pretty good overall - all elements in the dessert combine well flavor-wise, the strawberry pieces are pretty good and flavorful and the chocolate chunks and sauce add a lot to the vanilla base. The whole thing blends well and is light and creamy with a small hint of richness to it.

The problem is with the texture. The elements in it have radically different textures - the base is soft, the strawberries are slightly mushy and crystalline, but the main problem lies with the chocolate chunks - they are very hard and the flow of the dessert is broken up by them in a rather annoying way. The strawberries also don’t seem to mesh well with the base icecream either in texture, since you have to bite into the fruit to get the flavor but you don’t really want to BITE a scoop of icecream. Cold stuff on the teeth never felt good!

Overall, while all the elements here work well, they just don’t work well together. I’m not sure what I’d do to change this flavor, but it does need some improvement before it gets a 4 or 5.

This is kind of an unusual one and it was really hard for me to write a review for it. At first glance it seems like it has a lot of the things I’d love in a perfect flavor - chocolate swirls, big strawberry chunks - but the way it ends up combining them is really kind of lackluster.

For starters, the default vanilla icecream base seems like a copout. Yeah, Blue Bell’s vanilla is great, but a chocolate base here would have been much more interesting and appropriate. The chocolate swirls are okay, though I would have liked more of them and less of the harder chocolate shell stuff they mixed in (I guess this is the “covered” part) because the random chewiness is a little disconcerting. No complaints about the giant strawberry pieces, frankly those should be in every flavor. I almost considered a 4 just because they were in here, but the other stuff drug it down a bit too much. There could have probably been more strawberry overall, in swirl form maybe.

To be honest the sort of chocolate + strawberry combo I would REALLY like would probably be a chocolate icecream base, fudge swirls, strawberry swirls, the big strawberry pieces, and maybe some brownie stuff up in there too. I guess I just described a totally different - and sadly, nonexistent - flavor though. Think I’ll throw cheesecake swirls in too while I’m at it, then!
