Just got my new GC Trailhawk with the hemi and was curious if anyone had upgraded the air intake. I found a couple of options in the $280 range that claim to give a little boost but curious to see if anyone has feedback on the subject before I jump in.

Thanks!

There have been several lively discussions. Some claim a little more pep, some claim it hurt performance, most say the Jeep sounds better, and because it sounds better it feels faster.... but then there are those of us not impressed by the WAH sound So I wouldn't predict any performance advantage without a tune. You tune the 2019 by buying a ECU from a tuner.

Pick a dry filter, folks here like Volant. Friends won't let friends install a K&N. There may be an install thread indexed in the modification sticky.

Thanks for the info, ColdCase! I'll look more into tuning it instead. Any recommendations on that route are greatly appreciated as well.

I may agree it may sound better but the OEM IS a cold air intake. So I don't get it. :dunno:

I've had a kn ca intake on my 12 hemi for a couple years now. Had my first cone filter warrantied after 2 yrs and 20kmiles only. Yes some throttle response I got. No mpg like they claim. The main reason I wanted one is for the rechargeable part. Buying paper filters monthly or every 2 months is pricy. I am on gravel road in heavy dust nightly during the warm months so it was needed.

There are paper filters that are re-usable or cleanable with a vacuum that do a much better job. The K&N won't filter well, lots of dust will get through to that intake manifold... along with the oil if you over oil it. But if you trade it every 3 or 4 years, its the next guy's problem.

I have the Mopar CAI. Going into it, I knew there would be no performance bump, but yes, the sound is better, and it looks cool under the hood.

I use a green filter for my Charger R/T and I like it. Did not give me any noticeable power increase. Slight noise change was it. The intake is so well designed from the factory that it’s hard to improve it as it is. I may use a volant dry filter in the Trailhawk or I may not. Guess it depends on whether or not the exhaust will sound good. Haha

Cold air intakes, reprogrammed ECU's, be sure to weigh alleged HP gains VS warranty issues.

Varoom Varoom sounds nice.

Nice decal looks so cool !!!

Hearing Warranty will not cover this - not so nice.

There are threads around showing Dyno proven HP gains on a WK2 hemi using a volant.

That video is great, if you want to justify your purchased based on increased performance it will support it, not buy based on hurting street performance it will support it. Nice

I'll have to dig up the normally aspirated RAM truck video, which is more relevant to the WK2 weight and drivetrain... it shows the torque dropping way off, and the 5.7 has weak knees to begin with. One can't argue that achieving internal combustion engine peak horse power regardless is different than achieving the fastest or most satisfying to drive thing on the street. Life is full of compromise.

On that high strung engine on that day the graphs seems to show a noticeable decrease in torque output up to about 60 mph. Low end torque is more important to drivable heavy vehicles and mpg overall. But if you drive routinely where you need 60-70 mph passing power, its a different answer. So you have another data point justify any decision you want to make....

If you filter out the interweb FUD, for current drivetrains an aftermarket intake will decrease your off line power and 1/8th mile times, but your trap speed is higher. You may be even bumper to bumper at 1/4 mile. Across country you may be able to cruise at 105mph instead of 103. An astute mentor of mine said the best way to have more fun/performance on the street is to drop down a gear or two. Just costs a pint or two of fuel and you don't void the warranty.

I used to run a dyno which is a very useful tool for comparing mods and tunes on a single vehicle for a specific application, like racing. No one other than a marketeer would transcribe results from one day/vehicle/engine to another vehicle with any confidence.

Now style and impressing girls is another issue altogether.

I should have put some popcorn with that video as I was wondering what people's responses would be. I agree with you Coldcase - people always talk about horsepower and performance gains, but the reality is most of that is in an RPM range that we never drive in. I come from a racing background (super bike motorcycles), and if you didn't keep the RPM in the top 4k (out of 16k) you were losing power. peak horsepower numbers have nothing to do with driving on the street. Or they shouldn't. You'd be a ******* to drive like that on the street. Take it to the track....

And that is why I loved my diesel Passat until they pulled it from me. Real world power in low RPM - was awesome to drive around.

Does a cold air intake help a 5.7 Hemi?

The last note is especially important for the Dodge 5.7 HEMI. It's a great engine but we often state that the big 5.7L V8 is underpowered from the factory. A cold air intake is a great addition to help wake up the 345 HEMI.

How much horsepower does a cold air intake give a 5.7 Hemi?

Installing a cold air intake will increase your car's torque, horsepower, and efficiency. You can expect an increase of up to 15 HP after implementing these performance parts for the 5.7 Hemi.

How much HP does a cold air intake add to a 5.7 Hemi Charger?

How much HP does a cold air intake add to a 5.7 hemi? A 5.7 hemi can expect up to 30 or so extra horsepower with the addition of a cold air intake.

How much HP does cold air intakes add?

Cold Air Intakes are said to improve your vehicle's performance by 5-20 horsepower. This number will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. While this isn't enough power to put you back in your seat, it will give your car or truck a little pep in its step.
