All In a Day’s WorkReading p.2Name:Second In CommandThe Constitution of the United States gives the president a helper: thevice president. However, the Constitution doesn’t say much aboutwhat the vice president does, except that the VP is also the presidentof the Senate (one of the two lawmaking chambers in Congress). Butthe VP only presides over the Senate to cast a tiebreaking vote orwhen there is a ceremony. The rest of the time, the vice presidentadvises the president, travels the world negotiating with othercountries, helps carry out laws here at home, and is important tomany functions in the executive branch of government. What If the President Dies? There have been several times in the history of the United Stateswhere a president has died. When that happens, the Constitutionprovides that the vice president becomes president. It also givesCongress the power to make a law saying who becomespresident if something happened to both the president and thevice president. Congress did this in the Presidential SuccessionAct, which puts the speaker of the House (the leader of theHouse of Representatives) next in line after the vice presidentand lists everyone who is in line after that.Political Party LeadersThe president and vice president act as the leaders of their politicalparty. This role is not part of the Constitution, but has evolved overtime as part of the political process. A political party is an organizedgroup of people who share similar views and work to influence thegovernment in support of those views. As party leaders, thepresident and vice president work to accomplish the party’s goals forhow the government should address the issues facing our nation. The Republican and Democratic parties are the two major politicalparties in the U.S.
