Jeep calls it a Data Link Connector and it is located on a pigtail at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (the "computer") located on the inside of the left front fender. If you buy a reader, make sure it is capable of reading OBD I and has the proper connector. Most readers you encounter on the market today will be for OBD II which has replaced OBD I since 1996. Be aware that you can obtain the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) by cycling the ignition key in the proper sequence and counting the number of flashes of the CHECK ENGINE lamp. You will then need to refer to a repair manual to decode the number indicated by the flashes. This feature makes a reader somewhat redundant. 09-20-2011, 11:48 AMMember Thread Starter

The PCM and its associated Data Link Connector on the 95 XJ are found under the hood as mentioned in my previous post...this is per the 1995 XJ FSM. The Data Link Connector you are looking for is a black 6 cavity, 4 pin connector on a pigtail near the PCM. 09-20-2011, 04:18 PMMember Thread Starter

With the case it adds $40-$50 for a plain looking case. My shop class has the full blown kit and it's super easy to use. 12-23-2011, 02:41 AMCF Veteran

It's better to start a new post and to state what year Cherokee you have. Then people can help without having to go back through the original post from 6 years ago. ALL '96 model year vehicles, of whatever make, sold in the US were required to be OBD-II.
Does 94 Jeep have OBD2 port? The 94 is OBD1. It has three diagnostic connectors.
What year did jeep go to OBD2?All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped.
Where is the code reader on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?OBD-II equipped vehicles have a connector located in the passenger compartment, usually accessible from the driver's seat (under the dash above the hood release lever in the Grand Cherokee WJ).
