I unlocked my car but somehow locked the keys in the trunk. So I have access to the entire car except for the trunk. What’s the best way to unlock a Honda accord trunk without a key?

Answer provided by

While it can be frustrating to feel like you’re locked out of your trunk, it’s easy to access it when you can get into the car’s cabin! Here are some of the easiest ways to unlock your Honda Accord trunk without the key:

  • Use the button or lever with the open trunk icon to pop the trunk. It should be close to the steering wheel.
  • You can also access the trunk through your back seats. But you’ll need a screwdriver remove the trunk access panel before you can reach into the trunk.
  • If all else fails, call a locksmith to help you out.

Hopefully, these tips can help you access your Honda Accord trunks without the key. But remember, your trunk is built to keep out thieves. You’ll usually be best off calling a locksmith than struggling to open it without the proper equipment.

So we have a 1999 EX V6 and a 2001 EX 4 cyl (both sedans). I have no problem with the door locks on the 1999 but the 2001 will randomly lock automatically, usually when the car is parked and keys are in the car leaving us to call AAA or try to pry the door open enough to unlock it. Today the car was idling in a Home Depot parking lot (it was cold and we were trying to warm the car up) as we were loading stuff into the car and trunk. We closed the doors to return the shopping cart and the freaking doors locked with the key in the ignition and the engine on. Obviously we didn’t lock it via key fob and I thought it wasn’t supposed to lock at all with the the key in the ignition. I know newer Accords have an auto lock feature but from what I can tell from the owner’s manual there is no such feature on the 2001 Accord. To my knowledge there is no aftermarket alarm system.
Does anyone have an idea of what is going on here? I’m starting to think the car doesn’t like us lol. Would changing the doorlock actuator fix the issue or is it likely the actual car that is doing this? It’s been an occasional problem since we bought the car. In fact the day we bought it (private sale) we had to wait for roadside assistance to let us back in because we had set both keys on the seat while we did the paperwork. Ugh. We had a door key made and got a hide a key since we were already at Home Depot. Unfortunately I think we sort of bent the door frame a bit getting it unlocked so yeah that’s a whole issue in itself.

I'd start by taking the battery out of the fob just to see. You can still lock the car and unlock it from the driver's door without the fob to disarm the security system.

Never heard of your specific problem. The multiplexor units that tie into the security system haven't proven to be Honda's crowning achievement in this generation so that could be responsible somehow. I'm no radio frequency know it all but there might be interference coming from somewhere that is faking the system into do these things. You could also try reprogramming your fob(s) which I think could roll the communication to a different frequency in case there is something in your area that is close enough to bleed over. There's a bulletin with instructions on this site.

And yes you can definitely lock the doors with the door switch from inside with it running, just not sure it can be done with the fob.

My '00 Coupe randomly did the same thing too. Fortunately, I starting noticing this in the first year and still under warranty. I also had an unchipped key cut and put it in a hide-a-key box behind the front grill. After 3rd or 4th time it locked itself (Sure glad I had that hidden key!), Honda replaced the multiplexer and it never happened again in the next 15 years. (I sold it in 2016.)

How do you get into a locked Honda Accord?

In some Honda models, this key lock remains hidden near the handle of the side door. So, look for a small panel near your car handles. When you find the panel, take it off to reveal the unlock button. Now press the unlock option from the push-button remote and see if the doors of your car open.
