Peace Silver Dollars
Created to celebrate America’s victory in World War I, these Silver coins helped establish the U.S. as a major world power. The 1921 Dollar set the tone for the rest of the series, which will go down as one of the most popular in history. The obverse features the profile of Lady Liberty while the reverse depicts the majestic image of a perched American eagle with an olive branch in its talons as a symbol of peace.
This coin, minted from 1921-1928 and again in 1934 and 1935, was the last U.S. Silver dollar coin minted for circulation. Many Silver dollars, including the Morgan Dollar, were melted down during World War I. Silver Peace Dollars were minted to replace the Morgan Dollar. These rare coins were designed to be symbolic of peace, but an initial design that used a broken sword was dropped because people thought it signified defeat.

History, Information, and Value of 1934-S Peace Dollar
Value of 1934 San Francisco Mint Peace Silver Dollar
The 1934-S Peace
dollar is regarded as the key issue in the Peace dollar series due in part to its relatively small mintage and rarity in Uncirculated condition; most were released into circulation. Today, high quality Uncirculated coins sell for more than any other standard variety in the Peace dollar series. Look for coins with better than average strikes and attractive luster. Coins at higher grades are worth the price as they should appreciate or at the very least maintain their value. Beware of
uncertified coins, as counterfeits exist due to the high demand for and high prices of this issue.
Even Circulated 1934-S Peace Dollars Command Premiums: EF and AU pieces are moderately priced given the key-date status of the issue, but you will need to be patient to locate an example.
As A Key Date, 1934-S $1 Coins Can Get Expensive If MS: This date is available in MS-65 or MS-66 though both grades are thin in population at the major grading services.
A pleasing MS-64 will fill the bill for most collectors and cost far less than a higher grade piece. This date is notorious for flatness at Liberty’s hair strands so keep an eye peeled for a sharp specimen. Pale golden toning is frequently found so choose a coin that is lustrous but free of blotchy toning. This key date is always in demand so the competition is hot for nice examples.
The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1934.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace; S.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
